Paris Olympics SPOILER Thread
Might as well set up a thread to discuss the cycling at the 2024 Olympics.
Last time we ended up discussing loads of other sports too, which was quite handy for finding the more unusual and fun events. I'm particularly looking forward to kayak cross, where four paddlers in identical boats are tipped into the river like human bath toys and then left to battle it out to the finish line. It looks like thoroughly enjoyable chaos.
The cycling itself starts with the TTs on Saturday and mountain biking on Sunday/Monday, before lots of grown adults messing about on children's bikes (which is more fun to watch than you'd expect). The track stuff is in the second week.

Annoyingly I'm in Paris from Monday to Friday next week so arrive after the TTs and leave before the RRs. I'm thinking of watching the triathlon but it's an early start (8.00 - 10.30) and I'm staying outside of the city centre so will probably miss it. My friend made the marathon qualifying time but she was only the 4th fastest over the qualifying period and they took the fastest 3 or I would have probably gone back over to watch that.

I'm looking forward to the surfing in particular, if Teahupo'o gets a decent sized swell it's going to freak some people out.
Other than that I'll obviously be becoming an expert in five minutes in some niche sport I barely knew existed last week and will have forgotten again by Xmas.
Oh and obviously, I'll be keeping tabs on all the cool and trendy things like rollerboarding, broken dancing and bicycle motocross

They can do the surfing in some far flung colony, but can't go to the mountains for the mountain biking?

TBF you can find a muddy hillside more or less anywhere, but Paris has not previously been noted for its amazing reef breaks

Also, there's nowhere in the Northern hemisphere with much surf in the N. summer. That's just how oceans work. I've no idea how most European countries will find a suitable surf location if they get to hold an Olympics. Probably have to splash out many millions on a wave pool

Good chance an artificial surf pool can turn a regular profit once it's built though?

Looks like Van Aert could be going double disc wheels. Light winds, lots of shelter. Conditions might favour him.
I was fairly confident Tarling would win. Not so much now.

I know Tarling is good, but why is he being rated so much higher than Remco and Ganna? Because Remco rode thee Tour and Ganna is riding track? All the betting odds point at Tarling as well.

Pidcock thinks the MTB course is a bit rubbish

Because it's a pan flat course that suits Tarling? And his training has been 100% focused on this event whereas Remco is coming out of the Tour and Ganna has also been training for the track?

Looking very wet as the women set off here, and yeah, the roads look a little patchy

Watching the rugby 7s and they are having problems with the conditions too.
Pleased to find that the Discovery Plus streams are ad free. I was worried, given the American parentage ‘n all.

If I wasn’t off to Italy for 3 weeks soon I would be tempted to buy discovery, as the terrestrial coverage is 50% people on sofas talking about stuff, 30% replays I’ve already seen and only 20% actual sport.

American mechanic goes flying with a bike change, this route must be very dodgy in the rain

Can't be good for the beach volleyball

Remco has just done the tour. Tarling has been targeting this race all year. Ganna hasn’t completely.
