What to Expect.
This is stage 14 and it's the first proper mountain stage and summit finish. Expect a battle among the GC boys. It may, or may be a full on affair, given the following stage is also tough day at the office. So, stage 14 is also perfect chance to salvage things for riders who started the Tour with GC ambitions but fell behind. Plus, of course, for those who’ve been eyeing success in the mountains from the start.
Pau
Stage town for the 75th time.
Jambon de Bayonne.
Jambon de Bayonne is a dried pork ham from south-western France that matures for at least seven months and is salted using salt from the Adour river basin. During the maturation process, the ham gets tender and develops its distinctive aroma with hazelnut notes, and delicate taste, along with its melt-in-the-mouth properties when sliced thinly.

SAINT-LARY-SOULAN AND CYCLING
In 2021, Tadej Pogacar confirmed his domination over his rivals by overtaking Jonas Vingegaard and Richard Carapaz on the Col du Portet to claim his second stage win of the Tour, before repeating the feat the following day in Luz-Ardiden. In 2018, Nairo Quintana saved a somewhat disappointing Tour de France by winning on the Col du Portet at the end of a short 65km stage from Luchon on an F1 Grand Prix-style grid. Lucien Van Impe won here in 1976 (see Saint-Gaudens). The Belgian climber also consolidated his polka-dot jersey here in 1981. This was also the case for Mariano Martinez (1978) and more recently Rafal Majka (2014), on the heights of the village at Pla d'Adet. It was also in Saint-Lary that Daniel Mangeas made his debut as a Tour announcer in 1974.
Poulet Basquaise
Simple, yet bursting with typical French and Mediterranean flavors, poulet Basquaise is one of the most famous French stews. Translated as Basque-style chicken, the dish incorporates authentic French ingredients and traditional French cooking techniques. The main ingredient in this classic dish is chicken, usually only legs or thighs which are generously spiced with Espelette pepper, an authentic French pepper variety. Another traditional French ingredient in the dish is Bayonne ham, the salty, air-dried ham which gives a smoky flavor to the stew.

The weather for the weekend is set fair, after a bit of cloud this morning.

I'm a simple soul, that Tourmalet climb is my favourite.

Averaged 30mph yesterday. Some rest day!

30mph in the middle of the peloton isn't too hard though, no?
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

You don't need to be deliberately controversial you know. He didn't bonk, and you know it.

And yesterday was hardly a rest day, they were raving most of the day.

Is anyone expecting anything other than the usual formulaic mountain stage of a decent sized break, the GC teams riding tempo up the Tourmalet with a reduced peloton in their wake, the bus forming early on that climb and the action kicking off half way up the final climb?

Johan Bruyneel said it looked like a lack of fuel just to name one - doesn't make it true but it's not a controversial view.

Not sure Bruyneel having the same take is quite the defence of having a controversial view 😜
but yeah he looked hungry to me.

Action might kick off at the base of the final climb, given that's the steepest part, but otherwise I imagine it'll be pretty standard
Might be a prolonged effort to get a break away if Visma and UAE are playing silly buggers with it

I want to see lenny in the break.

Another C19 positive, according to PCS. Quite a retro vibe building in this Tour.
(I did, momentarily, consider him for the breakaway PTP of the day.)

I recall some camera footage of Pogi rejecting a bottle from the neutral support motorbike. Wrong sort of nutrition?

That did happen so he clearly needed something else that wasn't available. He was still drinking just prior to the final sprint so wasn't low on fluids.

One for the break? Can't see UAE wanting to go all in for the stage and Visma would probably prefer not have a sprint for the bonus seconds.

G has covid positive but is racing... Why risk it?

Who's got the feeling UAE are going to mess this up and Jonas rides away?

Wanted the bottle at top of climb but wanted the motorcycle water guy to know in advance to be ready

Capiot has no chance. Might as well abandon now.
Footing the bill for yesterday’s crash.

It's possible but I'm not really expecting fireworks today

I think Pogacar will get Covid and Jonas rides away.

Capiot climbs off, his team car is there but they haven't got any space for him, so he's into the broom waggon. That's a double ouch.

Well that would be pretty shit

We know Covid is doing the rounds in the peloton It’s in the UAE team. Same for Ineos.
I just have a feeling….
