'Ouses, Greenbelt and stuff

In my limited experience, locals tend to get very attached to odd bits of it. Including bits they put the Edinburgh bypass right through.
There needs to be a more helpful green space designation associated with developments, in my view. Probably there already is, but from what I can tell in the Edinburgh area it amounts to some shit grass over rubble and a few doomed saplings.

There’s already an obligation on planning authorities to maintain a Brownfield register.

Leatherhead has a plan for exactly that, former car parks and a bit of grass in the middle of the one way system to be turned into mostly residential with a bit of retail/office, seems like a good idea (no idea if it would classed as green belt or the new definition of grey belt, they just opened the consultation)

If you look at the map of the green belt land it's pretty obvious how arbitrarily the boundary has been set. Slightly larger houses with a carriage driveway: green belt; group of semi-detached houses: not green belt.

I'm surprised how much green belt there is around Cambridge.

Okay, so it's out of date.
What is there to ensure there are contiguous green spaces that prove liveability? I see some pretty dense developments when I travel around. Fortunately where I've lived in south Scotland there is immediately adjacent nothing, so it is barely an issue. Same here I suppose.
But when I go back to where I grew up I get almost claustrophobic because I need a car to get to anything much larger than playing fields.

I'm in it, so I know what it looks like. But Labour are making a distinction between nice bits and not as nice bits and as mentioned there is going to be a reason why the not so nice bits are designated as 'grey belt'.
The other point being, you can make most places look nice, but are they in the right location i.e. where people want to live? As I mentioned above.

I think that Labour may be underestimating the steely determination of NIMBYs up and down the country at their peril. It's going to be an interesting scrap to watch.

As I understand it, by reintroducing targets and making presumed content the consequences of not saying where those targets can be met, labour are putting the fight between local councils and local people. Like I said, canny. Take the credit for the bit people like (ooh yes we need more houses) and distancing themselves from local flashpoints (but we don't like houses there).
Suspect it's going to be fairly easy in a lot of cases to identify low value green belt. Bit like porn, hard to define l, but you know it when you see it.

start with anything within a mile radius of a railway station. Anything blocking that get rid of it

And the fragmented parts of lower amenity and wildlife value. Lots of those will be near major roads, unfortunately.
I guess I'm spoilt. I am still struggling with traffic noise here from a mile or more away. And the all the bloody wedding venues.

It hasn't started yet.

If only it were that simple.

Please explain in more detail.

No shit sherlock. Do you really think it's a case of waving a magic wand and enabling the govt to do whatever it wants?

Lift on presumption against onshore wind has gone under the radar. That will cause more of a shitstorm, I reckon. You lot have no idea how big the turbines are now, and there are a lot more landowning people to object in England than in Scotland.

The scruffy bits tend to be on the edges of existing settlements, or next to roads so connection isn't too much of an issue.
Personally I think the whole idea of Green Belt needs scrapping. It's an arbitrary town planning designation, not some aesthetic judgement on how pretty somewhere is.
This is Green Belt land for example
Look at the beautiful tin sheds and polytunnels 😄
There are thousands of homes, villages and towns surrounded by the Green Belt, and it's an economic straightjacket on all of them. I don't think adding more complexity to the planning system by creating another category is what's needed.

That's the house BB is buying for 4 million. Where is the pool?

By way of contrast this is about a mile away inside the benighted Great Wen.

Is it worth mentioning that, rather tidily, they've got a [one hundred and] eighty seat majority?

Better get started on those tunnels and a tree house! 😉

If someone succeeds in making an airship to carry the blades, they can go really big. Saving the world and annoying you at the same time.

No I'm fine now. I live in a national landscape and world heritage site, next to a national park. Pylons and housing are frowned upon here.

Not a problem for me personally 🙂

I'm not talking about a fight in parliament though.
