The Big 'Let's sell our cars and take buses/ebikes instead' thread (warning: probably very dull)

So the LTN thing seems to have gone along the lines of:
- People in one London constituency just about voted to keep a Conservative MP with ULEZ being seen as a major factor.
- Tories decide policies that move away from "anti-motorist" stuff is a sure fire vote winner and announce a series of pro-motoring "policies" (including u-turning on their own previous policies).
- They undertake a report that finds that it actually isn't this big vote wiining issue they thought it was and that actually LTNs are supported by more people than not in the areas that have them.
- In response to the report they make a big announcement of the changes being made to force Councils to do stuff that they are actually already doing under the existing system.
Have I missed anything?

You must think it's a worthwhile intervention for some reason.
Is it this?

Nope.

Didn't they also announce they were going to try to stop councils using the DVLA database to fine drivers for driving through closed roads that aren't physically blocked?
If that means more bollards instead of cameras, that's all good.

If councils are already doing these things then there should be no objection to putting them in the regs, as they won't need to change anything, will they? The objections I am seeing on here suggest otherwise.

At least then they won't be fleecing drivers. However councils probably should consider is it really necessary in the first place and whether the money would be better spent filling in potholes etc.

So wherever it is, you think it's a valid place to have a 20mph zone, but you don't know why? I doubt a 20mph zone is there to stop drivers driving into each other on a dangerous bend, but could be wrong.

Not sure why you're quizzing me on specific instances like that?

I don't think anyone is objecting, just pointing out that this 'big change' they are bringing in isn't actually going to do anything substantial as it is already the normal practice. They're just trying to save face after forking out for a review that didn't give them the answer they were expecting / hoping for.

I'll stop if you don't want to engage. Just thought it was interesting to understand why you thought that particular 20mph zone where you have local knowledge was appropriate, but any restrictions where you don't have local knowledge are almost always not appropriate.

Just realised our local road blocks are the first picture on the wikipedia page for LTNs.

They are already in the guidance (these aren't regs or proposed as such). You've just not noticed because nobody has proposed an LTN where you live. This is a classic re announcement of a thing that is already in place to make it look like something is happening.
Jeez, you're as bad as Chasey and his boomer obsession.

You seem to be posting a quite a lot on this topic. People in glass houses...
Anyway, I chuck my tuppenceworth in as this thread needs a bit of balance, otherwise the anti car brigade might think they're right.

Partly professional interest as it's a topic that cuts across my projects and partly a family interest as my brother works in the transport sector. You seem to have swallowed the story that LTNs are some sort of anti-motorist scheme that are brought in without oversight. I'm trying to reassure you that this is generally not the case (obviously I can't vouch for the probity of every local authority in the country) and that they are introduced through a quasi democratic process similar to a planning application. A group of residents prepare and lodge an application. The LA consults with neighbouring residents and then elected councillors execute the plan (or not if it doesn't gain support). So if one is introduced where you live against your wishes and after your objections not being upheld then you are free to vote accordingly at the next local election. If you want to be more actively involved in local transport decisions it isn't hard to find out more information and where you can make your thoughts known.

Maybe stop thinking of it as anti-car and seeing it as pro-residents.

Design. The 60 kWh battery version is expected to weigh about 1,800 pounds (820 kg), much lighter than most electric vehicles.

Batteries are heavy currently, but smaller lighter vehicles has to be better than two to three tonne SUV tanks.

An older-model Classic Mini may weigh between 580kg and 660kg, and late-1990s models weigh approximately 700kg.

Electric cars are still traffic.

Whatever you call it, it seems to be working, even if the hyperbolic headline overstates it somewhat.

Must admit that when I moaned about how busy it is 'up there', I was told that 20m people live within an hour of one or the other. Dartmoor is not even a tenth of that, and that's what I gauge 'busy-ness' on. Well, and here in France, which makes even Dartmoor look busy most of the year.

You aren't necessarily comparing like with like. How busy is it within an hour of Paris? Or compared to where you are and Sheildaig?

I see some saddos with too much spare time have installed unofficial bat boxes over some ULEZ cameras to abuse laws that mean the boxes can't be removed until inspected by a properly licensed person. Nice bit of 'tax payer' money being wasted there to achieve nothing. It's also weird how the right-wing media approve of this sort of protest but not similarly stupid stunts by the likes of Just Stop Oil.

Similar articles on the news about Snowdonia including one woman moaning how busy the roads were for her when travelling there and that she got lucky to have the last space in the car park. To be fair I suppose it isn't that unreasonable, these places rely on tourism but are badly served by public transport due to the remoteness that makes them appealing to start with.
