The Big 'Let's sell our cars and take buses/ebikes instead' thread (warning: probably very dull)

If there was any likelihood of it being close, I would hold my nose and vote for Khan the bus slayer, but my vote isn't necessary.

I'm not taking any chances. Assumption, as they say...
Apart from anything else, there is a perverse pleasure in seeing Labour elected in affluent Devon in present circumstances. (FWIW, there are big chunks of Devon that aren't affluent at all, but that tends to get overlooked.)

FWIW, I'd remove whinging rights from anyone who doesn't vote. But then I have zero power so...
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

In every election there's no perfect candidate, but I normally find a preference. You not voting means my preference gets priority over yours. It doesn't send a signal to anyone.

Turnout in the last mayoral election was 41%.
That means Count Binface could conceivably get 59% if the non-voters turned up.

I normally vote. Just struggling with this one.

I've read all the candidates main ideas. What a depressing bunch. They all seem to have views on ULEZ .

Leaving aside that postal voting is a thing and that even in the sticks polling stations are in walking distance it’s quite a clever tactic for her. Rile up the core voters and get your excuses in early for losing “I only lost because my voters couldn’t afford to drive to the polling station. It was rigged”.

This is Greater London. You'd have to try really hard to find somewhere that wasn't within walking (or mobility scooter) distance of a polling station. There are 66 polling stations in my borough alone.

Yeah, I don't think that democracy is in a healthy state in many places at the moment (e.g. Biden v Trump) when the best you can do is find the least depressing candidate.

Yeah, that was my point. Even in the sticks you’ll get one in walking distance so in the city they’ll be even closer.

Open call for evidence
Restricting the generation of surplus funds from traffic contraventions
Seeks views on how to restrict the ability of local authorities to generate surplus funds from penalty charge notices.
This call for evidence closes at
11:59pm on 11 May 2024
Here's a piece of evidence that there is a big problem: "In London alone, more than 7 million PCNs were issued in the year ending March 2022, but in the 40,000-plus cases where drivers appealed, just under half (43%) were overturned."

Local councils should operate to reduce genuinely dangerous and irresponsible driving. If councils come to rely on surpluses from enforcement to fund wider spending, this risks an incentive to take a disproportionate approach to technical or minor breaches by well-intentioned drivers.
Call me idealistic, but I think cars should not be in bus or bike lanes, people should not drive through no entry signs or turn right where there's no right turn, however "well intentioned" the driver may be when making these technical breaches.

just over a quarter of a percent doesn't seem like a bad rate of overturned cases.
There are so many more that go uncaught, I don't see much evidence that they are being disproportionately targeted. I had a box van nearly run me over this morning turning down a no entry street from a segregated cycle lane, he was driving down the cycle lane next to this subway!

Should be some indication on them that they are cycle lanes, tbf.

In the response, it gives you the opportunity to tick a box saying whether you think it is fair, then in the comments, to say how it could be made fairer.
I'm worried that my suggestion that it is unfair because there is not enough enforcement will get misinterpreted.

He probably couldn't see the road markings due to all the bloody cyclists cluttering the place up.

Thanks for the tip-off about that.

Interested to know what you put.
I put "Higher levels of enforcement of these restrictions would help drivers comply. "

Seems like a win-win, fewer people blocking box junctions etc so traffic flows better, or more money to spend fixing potholes if they keep doing it and get fined.
I don't see why any non-terrible drivers would object.

#waronmotorists of course

I am generally pretty inclined towards pacafism but #waronshitdrivers is something I can get on board with as a cyclist, a pedestrian, a motorcyclist and a driver.

Haven't put anything yet, only saw your post this afternoon.

Is it a mandate for pay per mile that they said he was going to introduce?

Its bizarre that given the Tory party are likely to spend the next few years in opposition, they didn't pick a proper candidate, surely the senior Tories would rather spend a few years as Mayor of London rather than Shadow secretaries.

You need a catastrophic electoral defeat to purge the party of its worst elements. Not happened yet.

It just turns out that messages like "we want your kids to not be safe going to school" and "we support cutting down traffic lights" doesn't make you look good.
