My god it's hard to follow two races, each containing a Yates.

    You're not the only one:
The middle of the stage was marked by further abandons, as Frank crashed out of the break, and Geraint Thomas (Team Sky) climbed off suffering with stomach problems. On the third climb of the day, De Gendt once again beat De Marchi to take another four points, a result that would be repeated on the penultimate climb.

My guess is that Geraint's stomach problems have now passed and he is working on having a bit of a headache in the morning. :D

So, at the end of the day, Edet 3rd and Hivert 5th on the stage, Phil Gilbert climbs to 2nd on the GC.
Not sure what that says about the remaining GC boys. That "battle" was a complete dud.
The Yates v Colombia match was OK, but the Tirreno rollercoaster stage wins hands down, today.
    First time this week.

Today's final stage is the usual variation on the same theme, although the GC doesn't have the same look about it as in recent years.

That's what happens when Rowe sorts the sheep from the goats in the first couple of stages. Plenty of GC ambitions died very early. The start list was a little less than stellar in GC terms to begin with.
Yates V Colombia was excellent viewing, all four riders put in good digs several times, none could snap the elastic. I enjoyed it.

Lead group is Quintana, Soler, Yates, Van Garderen, Lopez, Izagirre, Sanchez, Pozzovivo, Grossschartner, Naesen, Martinez and Kelderman.

Still a cat 1 and cat 2 ahead, Quintana will have to do a lot of work if he wants this, Soler is doing it now but he's all that's left of Movi.

    A Colombian pursuit race.

Bernal still has about five teammates with him, Quintana just Soler. Gilbert seems not to be in either group.

Quintana already having to do his own work already on the cat 1. He's dropped Soler. There's a long descent.

Sky behind have everyone except Rowe.

    A touch desperate imo.

None in the front group giving Quintana any help at all.

Sky will take a huge chunk on the last km of the flat before the climb.

Looks like Sky trying to get both Bernal and Kwia to the top together - either to protect Kwia's GC or to give soe help to Bernal on the descent.

Impressive showing by Quintana even though Bernal will now catch him. He did a lot of work on the flat against a whole Team Sky there.

IZAGUIRRE takes it, he made the only serious attack from the lead group (Yates had a late dig) and nobody went with him or closed him.

Kwia and Bernal closed the gap to Quintana croseed the line a few seconds after him.

    Great win for Bernal.

He worked hard, but I think Sky probably left him dangling a bit tbh. They didn't up the pace until the last km of flat, where they took 10-15s out of him.

Sky's record in French WT stage races:

Paris-Nice: Six wins from last eight
Dauphine: Six wins from the last eight
Tour de France: Six wins from the last seven

Their record in other races (Romandie aside) is fairly ordinary. They're only managed to win five British championships in their history.

I guess the rather unimaginative ASO route planners suit their style of racing.

Or that with the TdF as their major target each season, they favour riding ASO races as preparation. I reckon winning every other British champs is decent, tbh.

  • Still very impressed with Valentin Madouas FdJ. Gutsy riding from the 22 year old to lead the Bernal group in and stick with Molard. 11th GC go on that course with those tough sprint stages is some going
