Hubs: Hope Pro2 or Shimano XTR?

"I'd always put durability before weight"
Its why I have two bikes, for two different riding types. The Zaskar is still incredibly strong for its weight though.

Yet people are willing to spend 100 quid more for the 50g saving Pro2 has over XT...<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">
I wouldn't if I weren't getting a really good price on the Hope ones.
The interchangability of the Hopes is swaying me too, when the time comes to get a new fork, should I decide to get a bolt through I like the fact that you can convert the Pro 2 to a 20mm for œ20.

Well, its a nice option, and a good advantage of hopes, but not sure why you'd want a heavy bolt thru fork on an XC bike! Hope could prob produce a QR only version that drops the weight some more.

I don't necessarily WANT a bolt through at the minute, but by the time I've saved for a new fork I might have changed my mind or riding style (who knows!!). The weight difference is negligible though so unless you're daft enough to pay top whack for a CK hub that sheds a few grammes then it's not really worth it.

Then you'd need a total wheel rebuild, as 717s are XC too lol ;-). CK nice, boutique stuff, but very expensive. Take a look at Tune...
Hey, have a read of this. ANd the reviewer in the bottom right.... and he hates Hope haha!

Lol @ Veg, what a character.
I doubt I'll be getting that much of a hard hitting fork, but bolt through are apparently better than QR in certain ways anyway.
Might get a Revelation... [;)]

Bolt thru offers better torsional stiffness, and steering/ tracking. Essential when the travel gets above 130mm, or you are a heavyweight rider. Generally a pound heavier in weight overall though. Mostly used by AM/FR/DJ/DH riders rtaher than XC trail kings.
Revs are great forks, a longer travel reba: but not bolt thru! If you only need 100mm, might as well get a reba, but I suppose it depends on your future bike (5inch travel both ends?!)

Exactly, I'd be trying to future-proof and upgrade-proof myself really since I have no clue what I'll want in 12, 18, 24 months time!

He's teaching you well ;-)
I don't think you'd ever part with Merlin though. You love it to much! Like me and Zaskar... be buried with that thing.

Merlin will always hang about now, but I'd probably leave it as a pootling bike.
I'll not replace him until I can afford either a shiny full suss or a Ti frame. I'm drawn to the Cotic Soda that Fozz was looking at but it's a bit out of my price range at the minute [:D]

My Ti dream lies firmly with the Gt Xizang, or the Seven Sola (slight price difference!) but the Carbon Zaskar is where my heart lies now. Preliminary reviews put it as a hard hitting, stiff hardtail, and frame only 2.6lbs!!! Sounds just the ticket. Would like a dual bounce 5 incher, sub 30lbs, but will have to make do with Carol* ;-)

Explanation in case anyone was wondering:
Paul gave me his Saracen D-Tox frame when he moved back down to Sheff, and we said we'd have to name it, so I said I should call it Carol, after Carol Vorderman - cos she's the QUEEN of D-tox!!
For the record I don't actually call it Carol...
