Hubs: Hope Pro2 or Shimano XTR?
Comments

Lol, its just that a lot of untrue things are said about Shimano hubs. Many peoples experiences are wwith the lowlier ones (like yourself - the ones on your Saracen were Altus hubs!) and not the top end stuff. Deore and below DO need frequent servicing. LX and XT are better, XTR superb.

Hmmm, good debate, but from my exploits.....
Hope.
I have had both Shimano hubs and Hope, which i'm riding now.
My old Shimano XT hubs died after a couple of years, constantly servicing them and cleaning them.
I now ride Hope XC, so the freehub is a little noisy, it warns dog walker that you're about to run over their little sh*tzoo's, or whatever they're called... (sorry, tangent moment..!), no problem at all with them.
When it comes down to it its your choice, but I recommend HOPE.

I have just ordered a new set of wheels and I ordered ProIIs. I did this because they're light, british and a bit pimpy. I already have a set on the hardtail and they haven't needed touching in a year BUT I serviced my XT 6 bolts a few weeks ago after 2 years and it was a waste of time - grease, balls and races were like new.
I'll knock 1 lb off my wheelset by changing, and aleady owning a set of Hope's, I wanted to keep the consistency of interchagebility and maintenance. However, if that were not the case, I would have been sorely tempted by XTRs.

I have never had problems with LX or XT hubs, I tend to find the rest of the wheel knackers first, either rims or spokes, in which case I would order a new set of wheels.

Yeah, my old LX hubs outlasted my back wheel which kept snapping spokes and the rim was full of dents and scratched to feck.
Its not really worth getting them built back up again when you can order good wheels complete.

Sonic, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. Most people when they ask a "which" question already have an answer in mind and they're looking for re-assurance. No offense anyone, we all do it, me as much as anyone. But that's why sound advice isn't always as appreciated as you'd think.
Anyway, my XT/719s have got years left in them, so they're replacing the 475s/117s on the Kona as my station/family/heavy touring/cycling into town bike. So I'll have three sets of MTB wheels:
ProIIs/CX-Ray/717
ProIIs/Comps/819
XT 6 bolt/Comp/719
Want to bet which will live longest? [;)]

You're right, I had pretty much already decided which ones I was getting (mostly due to price) but I was interested to see everyone's opinions.

I love my new wheels: DT240s + 717 + laced with Sapim CX-Ray spokes - they feel real smooth, light too. I got them from Action Sports for a good price.

Lol, that's not why I'm changing them. I'm changing them because they're nowhere near as good as the Verticals were, they skid out in the slightest bit of wet and don't seem as grippy as the verticals. Gonna give some Kendas a go and see what all the fuss is about.

Aye, thats why I have money ;-)
Heard good things about the Kendas, though never tried them. All the manufacturers seem to have a tyre that people like, it is one area where I don't argue. But Conti make the best hehe.

I still don't get the whole light weight thing, unless you're
a) racing
b) steve land who's tyres seem to float 3mm above ground.
Why would you take a risk of something packing in in the middle of nowhere to save a few grammes?

Yep! I know its a risk, but Crossmax have very good longevity records. I'm pretty light on components, though did trash my last XC wheels... 11.5st. I ahve the Ruckus for gnarlier stuff.

I'd always put durability before weight. If the bike's a bit heavier so what, means I get fitter trudging it up hills and stuff. I'd far rather have a bike that was heavier but withstood a bit of throwing about than one which was a light as possible but a bit more prone to damage.
