Hubs: Hope Pro2 or Shimano XTR?
I'm gonna be getting some new wheels within the next month (fingers crossed) and am having a debate about whether to go Hope or Shimano. They're to go on Mavic 717's.
I want pro's and cons of both hubs mentioned in the topic title please, and Sonic ISN'T allowed to reply to this thread cos I already know what his answer will be.

Can't say I'm fussed about the noise, it's performance/maintenance/availability of spares etc I'm concerned about.

One thing to consider also is the freehub, not just the axle bearings. How often do they need servicing replaceing?

I have a pair of '03 Hope XC hubs, I have never had to do anything to them at all re: repairs/maintainance etc.
They run as smooth as the day I bought them, & they have been submerged in some of Yorkshire's finest grinding paste @ Dalby when the 'old' red route was a mudbath in winter.
No cones to tighten, no bearings to loose via fridgesuck..
Hope are fit & forget stuff, top quality & British made.

One thing I never quite understood is the 'maintenance free' aspect of Hope hubs - they recommend stripping and greasing the freehub every three months! Shimanos top end hubs just don't need the freehub servicing at all, most last several years. I found all those pawls and springs more pain than cup and cone service wise lol (and with XTR and XT can be years between intervals).

My old LX hubs went 5000 miles or more untouched in the late 90s! It seems some are luckier than others with hubs, but I think its wrong to say Shimano need more service work (at least top end) - they don't. At least in my experience. Now Alivio hubs hehe. Also conditions play a part.

I guess the longevity of a hub depends on the amount and kind of riding you do too.
I think the reason everyone's saying Shimano need more service work is because cartridge bearings are far easier and quicker to replace than loose ones with cone & locknut (which I know from personal experience are a pain in the a%$e to service and get JUST right).
In anycase Paul - I told you not to post on here [}:)]

Shimano XTR are very low maintenance, bearings last longer (better sealed, angular contact - take more load, smoother), are lighter, free hub lasts MUCH longer, skewers far superior (better clamping, more secure). ?

Are you honestly saying that since the vote is now about 8-1 that those 8 people are absolutely wrong and only you are right by being the 1 to say Shimano?

07/08 Hope pro II hub bodies now stronger than ever, strong enough for DH and light enough for XC, granted not as light as XTR but much stronger, how many shimano hubs do you see on DH rigs?
Bearings on hope last for ages and when they do go you simply pop them out and replace, no faffing about with grease, cone spanners, new ball bearings etc. As for the load they take, cartridge bearings more than up to the job . The sealing on the new hope stuff is top notch, not saying shimano not well sealed but in 18 month on my hope bulbs, they have never been touched(bearings or freehub)and they are still as smooth as babies bottom. In the same sort of period my 105 hubs on CX bike and XT hubs on another bike require servicing far more reguarly otherwise they become notchy(ok i'm comparing hope with XT here and not XTR).
Hope hubs also have quicker freehub engagement, not something most people are bothered about but if you ride trials then it's definitely an advantage.
Hope are also backwards/forwards compatible between QR and bolt through both front and back.
For me Hope are just a better hub. Not saying Shimano don't make good hubs as they do but for looks, performance, fit and forget maintenance(well until the bearings eventually do go), versatility and ease of getting spare parts(try getting parts from madison for old shimano hubs) then it's hope pro II's everytime over XTR for me.

Futon got a decent deal on them and they do look sooooooo nice, more costly than my Hope pro II builds but a top set of wheels.

I can get the Hope hubs really cheap, about œ80 for both front and rear, that's definitely swaying me towards them...

Sorry Cazz, I had to post some facts, rather than just hype. Exact reasons are the truth I'm afraid. XTR also have much quicker engagement now, and the freehub NEVER needs servicing. How many Shimano bearings fail from load? None. Hope do. And they are NOT fit and forget, they need more frequent bearing changes and freehub servicing than XTR.

I bet Shimano don't come without problems either and you're making out like they're the worlds most perfect choice and any other just isn't even WORTH considering! I somehow doubt that the thousands of people who have run Hope hubs for decades without problems would agree with you when you say they're "bottom of the list" of hub choice.
