Average speed?

are people classing what there speedo shows when they're cruising along as their average?
Cos on my roadie we usually average about 14/15mph on the routes we do, but flat sections may see us around the 20 mark

There was straight flat gravel path, York to Selby, 16 miles which I could do in about 40 mins both ways. Top gear all the way, about 100 cadence or so. Actually it the actual average was 23mph, one run was wind assisted. Also I used a speedo until 1999 until the bike got nicked. I couldn't keep this pace up for much more than 2 hours - and I was thinking seriously about competing at XC back then.

Why didn't you compete then? You always told me Halfrauds had asked you to be on their XC team so what stopped you?

Straight line av speed on the flat on an XC bike is easy to av 20mph plus sustained for a fit rider. Add twists and hills and it changes. And I am talking arrow straight here. Didn't compete due to time and money, I was working my balls off to stay afloat on a pittance of a wage.

To be fair we rarely average much above that. We normally average about 18/19mph on the flat. Occasionally we deliberately up the pace and do anything up to 25mph for a few hours; but we'll be working as a group to achieve that sort of pace.

I think it also depends on whether you are riding for fun, or really really pushing. I would be physically sick pushing that hard sometimes! I would usually do the 32 mile round trip in about 1hr 45.

But you just said that you'd to 16 miles in 40 minutes, so where's the extra 25 minutes come from? Was that your Lucozade stop?

I remain sceptical. I reckon you're getting your mph and kmph mixed up [:P]
Although for the record, despite me going nowhere near that fast, occasionally on climbs, by the time I get to the top I feel physically sick and my back aches from that feeling. Goes away quickly though.

I average 18mph sustained for 40 mins when doing my commute along the canal on my avalanche with XC tyres. And it's that horrible gravel that seems to sap all the speed. Plus, I have only been riding 4 months. I don't see why 25mph is that hard to fathom.
