Hmm, it is very very hard to compare speeds. On some routes I might average only 10km/h, yet I can average 23km/h in summer of a 20km race route that I've devised.

Also depends how long you go for wilko, though 17 is quite a good average, club level is about 15 over 40-50 miles.
Are you sure your bike comp is accurate?

It's very hard to compare average speeds. But as I can't average 17mph on the road never mind off road then I would say your flying!!0

17 MPH is okay... alot of the speed that you get depends on the tyres. When I go for my rides I'm happy with anything above 8mph. Although saying that I am an offroad steep hill merchant steep hill or toughie

I think I must be really slowing down. I did a 10 mile time trial last weekend. I managed 23:40 which I was rather pleased with until I found out I'd come last!0 -

Thats not bad for a 10 at all. Avarage on that is well above 20mph. I sometimes miss my roadie days.............[:D]
Most of my MTB riding (XC) averages out anywhere between 10 and 14 mph depending on my route min of 10 miles max at about 30. I try not to pay too much attention esp when the sun is out and I'm just enjoying the ride.

I wouldn't worry too much, it's not how fast you go but how much fun you have that is important.

23:40 is 25mph? sounds pretty fast to me, what bike was it on?

17mph is decent going. I do a 14 mile flat training run on my MTB in an hour. Slowest is Delamere when I'm slogging off-piste. 4.5 mph average is not uncommon!!0

I nicked my ladies carrera vanquish. I still haven't got my new bike sorted.0 -
i don;t worry about getting faster, i just love riding, was wondering how fast other people are.
the 17 is on a 7 mile run to my athletics club i do twice a week, is along the thames path which ranges from smooth tarmac to tree roots as thick as my kneck. Is mainly flat(ish) stoney type surface (scientific eh)
but i could probably do that route with my eyes closed as i have cycled there all through the summer for the last 3 yrs.
I am sure it's accurate, is a garmin etrex, not a bike computer
thanks for all the replies!

I average about 15mph round Richmond Park during the week (in summer).
Drops to around 9mph on a 20 mile circuit of Holmbury & Leith Hills at the weekends.

I manage between 9/10mph - depends on the route, top speed off road 32/37mph :-)

GF3 - that's not a bad time at all for a 10 mile TT (especially as like me you're no teenager IIRC [;)]). I'd be VERY happy with sub 25 mins these days.
Normally I average around 12 mph on the MTB and about 18/19mph on the roadie. Both obviously depend on distance & difficulty.

Depends so much on the terrain and weather conditions. In my prime I could average nearly 25mph on fireroads and dirt tracks for hours, but as little as 7mph on the gnarly black XC runs of Wharncliffe.

We usually estimate an average of 10mph. We got down to 3mph on a long windy climb the other week, and got up to 30mph on the flat last week so it depends entirely on what kind of ride you're doing.

Yeah, 25 on that terrain on a moutain bike? That would put you at pro level on a good road bike.

That route we've been talking to you about Frankie, from Swalwell to Consett, Jon & Gordon occasionally do intervals along there and their top speed (even on a slight downslope) was 28mph or thereabouts and that was really pushing themselves!
Paul - I could swear you said you'd never used a cycle computer so how do you know what your speed was (out of curiosity only)?

We averaged 10km/hr doing Skyline (46km, 2000m ascent) the other weekend and managed 15km/hr doing The Wall and Penhydd (45km total, 1000m ascent). I feel slow now.

Na, that's average speed I'd say. I think some folk are confusing "average speed" for "top speed" here [;)]

As someone said earlier it depends on terrain and how long you are out for. I could average 27 MPH on a 5 minute ride but would be pushed to manage 15mph over an hour.
As a guide to get a gold time on the Evans rides you have to go faster than 10mph. They are generally a mix of road and singletrack with some big hills in (if they are at Leith/Tower Hill. I normally do the standard length (25-27 miles)and get a gold but when the conditions are atrocious and the mud is thick it is really hard to manage that. When doing the Polaris if I can manage 10mph I would be very happy (7hrs day 1,5hrs day 2)

I average around 15km/h on my usual hilly/traily/XC route. By the way, I use a Cateye Velo 8 to determine this, but it didn't give me the option to enter the diameter of my wheels. I assumed it was set to a standard 26" mtb wheel, but could it be set for a bigger road bike wheel instead?

27mph is easy, Lots of folks manage about that on the 162mile Paris-Roubaix, including 30 odd miles of cobbles.

Not a chance. Especially the "for hours" comment. You wouldn't be far of the British 25 mile TT record with a sub 50 minute time. So to average 25 over hours, you'd win TT's on a mountain bike. I think not.Roadie

Lance Armstrong's average speed for the Tour de France in 2005 was 25mph (also the quickest time trail ever in the Tour is 62km at 34mph in a team!)
Sonic must have a lovely section of downhill fireroad 50 miles long he rides on...or he was on a motorbike...or confusing mph and kph...or we have an interntional rider in our midst.
