Bear in mind that the last few hundred yards' or so climb to the actual St Martha's church is footpath; <s>West</s> East of that, the bridleway veers off and turns south to become the Downs Link. That said, that final climb is pretty much all sand, so it's not the most pleasant anyway and, IMHO, no great loss in riding terms.

Edited 'cos my East/West differentiation ain't much better than my choosing between left/right. Best I stick to driver's side/passenger side, I suppose.0 -
I usually don't take the Silent Pool foothpath myself, have just done it a couple of times, but have a bit of a masochistic love for it as it's where I've got most of my battle scars [:D]
I usually also go south from Newlans Corner into Blackheath, then head west and up Chinthurst hill (I just love that downhill now that I've regained some confidence after my last crash), into Shalfords and then follow the towpath into Guildford, which very practically ends up in the White House for a nice pint of Discovery [:D]

Sounds like sage advice to me - especially supping a nice pint of frothy, nut-brown ale as a reward [8D]
Gonna fix my derailleur problem tonight and go for a short ride and try out the longer ride on Sunday.
Cheers for your advice everyone0 -
I might go out as well actually, if I finish work early enough... nice short exploring ride will do me good, given that I'll spend the weekend on planes [:(]
