That is just fucked up. I like the way they leave all the pointy and now dangerous cut down wood all over the place, really improves the safety levels. Stuff like this makes my blood boil.

You should start kicking ass and taking names.

Right well the online petition is shit. People are signing it more than once. Im going to write one up tomorrow after school, and get as many people as physically possible to sign it. I reckon the locals( especially from campsie ( next to lennox )) should take the petition along to local newspaper, along with print out from descent world. Try and get an article published. Go to local MP and demand explanation, or for them to provide us with land and a written contract permitting building.

I want to stir up as much noise as possible about this. So....who's with me? lol

I was involved with the building from the start and have to say I'm gutted! Not only did we have verbal permission, we had written permission in the form of an email too. Only problem was we did not have a signature on the written forms. Now I know Ryan and Malkygee were trying for over a year to get a meeting sorted with the fc without luck. But despite not being able to arrange that they can arrange for four vans of workers with chainsaws to rip the place apart with only two days notice. Apart from the destruction its self, its the way the fc went about things that leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

I can appretiate that the fc do have concerns about injuries happening on their land, but the style of the trails left you in no doubt about the type of riding involved from the start. Also, if you are riding a hard-hitting freeride/downhill bike with a full-face helmet and armour, you surely have to accept that there is going to be a danger element involved and give up your right to sue/blame anyone other than yourself. Its hardly the sort of setup you use to ride down to the shops!

I road my bike to Sainsbury's the other day. Perhaps that's why I fell off the side of the see saw last time I road it..[:p]

You're right though, if you get hurt riding summat like that and then have the gall to try and sue someone you should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself.

If I crashed and seriously injured myself, if there was a chance of winning a case and getting œ1.2mil from the FC, I would do it.

Then buy some land on a hill with a forest and build my own NS trails. And DH trails.

Hurrah!

At a guess, I would say not all riders are responsible for themselves as individuals, I.e. kiddly winks that have had bikes bought for them and think they can ride things beyond the ability they possess due to the rig.
Cue much falling of and injury, parents see this, go mad, sue.
Whatever, it still sucks. Nearly all of our local Shore got destroyed not long ago, even though I personally am not a fan of shore (unless its built because the land is un-rideable), I still know how much time and effort goes into trail building.
Its gutting to see.

Hmmm, good point. Perhaps we should all nip over there this weekend and impale ourselves on the wreckage the Forrestry gimps have left behind.

Well I emailed Doddy and he replied

quote:

*//TYM- could be good for letters. Read comment at bottom//*

Hi XXXXXXXX,

I wasn't actually there on that shoot, but I remember the guys singing
praises about the place- it's unfortunate that it's come to it, but in
all honesty you sound pretty stuffed.
Our resident columnist and Shore builder Cliff had a similar problem but
on a bigger scale...
He used to run the AC Bikepark- an official riding park that had
complete rider insurance and a pay per ride membership basis. Once the
Health and Safety guys saw the place, he had to lower all the high stuff
(which people gave him unfair flak for doing so) in order to keep it
open. He also had to reconstruct every obstacle using the A-frame style
construction, put woodchip down and clear 'fall' areas around every
obstacle.
Bear in mind the park by this point had taken him and a friend nearly
two years to get to this stage. Still, he went through with it to keep
him dream going.
Unfortunately there was an accident, that as far as I know involved a
young rider walking a low section, who literally stumbled and broke his
neck. Nothing extreme at all. The insurance premium went through the
roof after the pay out to the kids family and there was simply no money
or way of keeping it open.

He still is utterly gutted.

If I was you, I'd do everything you could in order to /help /the
authorities making your shore 'safe'. At the moment there is no
governing body for North Shore as British Cycling don't seem to be
supporting it- The Forestry Commission appear to be the only
organisation that have any kind of guidelines as they utilise a lot of
'woodwork' at the various trails in Wales and Scotland. They also have
dedicated Freeride sites with North Shore- Mabie, Dark Side, Glentress,
Newcastleton and Haldon.
You can keep your site open, but you have to be positive. The stuff you
have probably won't be able to stay as tell me you love me as it is now, but
guidelines have to be met in order for us all to progress. If the UK has
a good selection of 'Shore' sites, guidelines for Health and Safety will
change- it's a new riding style for the UK, so of course Insurers and
the like won't like it as they don't have much to base their risk
assesssment on.
If everyone co-operates- or better still form some kind of nationwide
Union, firm guidelines can be met, in which park builders can adhere to.
We will be able to have bigger, gnarlier stuff- but we must learn to
walk before running...

Other than Forestry, Cliff and Esher Shore builder Rob Cole are the only
people that know a lot of the initial guideline inside out. Cliff is now
building at a secret spot with mutual agreement from the landowner on
the condition that he has no part of it whatsoever. Rob Cole is
constantly pushing ways of making his park better by building in unique
ways. The current guidelines are from ground level- so he uses landing
ramps into pits to increase the size of drops without increasing the
'fall to ground' danger level. You can contact Rob at Freeborn Cycles on
XXXXX XXXXXX, and Cliff via me at the MBUK office.
Good luck.

I've copied my Editor in as he may wish to use part of this in the
letters page. It's a difficult subject as no-one wants to tackle it as
it's not British Cycling backed. I'd like to look into this more.

Best regards

Doddy
