Jumping off tower bridge...
Comments

Go for it, just a few tips:
-Train, go down you local pool and try the highest board and find the best position etc
-What roj279 said, in WW2, specialist divers jumped from really high heights by dropping something like a brick like a second before they jumped to break the water
-Write a will
Good Luck!!

clench your ass cheeks. it stops water rushing in to your body.

It would be a good idea to have the boat near by as i wouldn't bet on being able to swim to the shore easily as the temperature of the water alone makes it pretty hard to swim/breath (i speak from experience.... well it was February but its not much warmer now!)

Slightly more than 20' then as that's maximum boat clearance, probably nearer 25.

they'll fall at the same rate prety much,
throw brick off, then jump,
brick hits water, sinks instantly but has destroyed surface tension
body hits water, will go deeper (but theres about 20ft of water, so it'll be fine) than without brick
the brick doesnt factor once its hit the water
there is always another option for breaking surface tension of water...
dump a load of washing up liquid in before jumping
bubbles ftw

I watched on Mythbusters or whatever that the throwing an object into the water before you jump doesn't actually help at all. You still hit the water with the same force

i saw something where some guys worked on the theory of throwing a hammer in before you somethign about people falling out of high tower cranes into water. they dropped a hamer and a dummy. the dummy lost one limb first time and atleast a second limb the second time. they decided that this theory was invalid.

i have done a cliff jump before , and its advisable to keep your arms folded across your chest and always look at your feet. This helps to keep you vertical.
i dunno how high tower bridge is ... but from 60 ft , the water clattered my knackers quite a bit (keep your legs together) and turned my eyelids inside out.
considering getting jabs ??
you just dont know what you are gonna be splashing about in, mostly diesel and turds i would imagine.
i hope this is gonna be videoed [:D]

i reckon the brick idea is a good one ... but you need to make sure you land on the spot where the brick has to make it effective.
To this end you will need to make sure its a big brick ( say a breeze block ) and you will need to tie the brick with about a metre of rope round your ankles.
this will ensure you land in the same spot and have a very comfortable landing.
No need to thank me [;)]0 -
I wouldn't do it.
I used to commute to work on the Thames every day and you wouldn't believe the things i've seen floating on the surface. Also, although you can't tell by looking at the surface, the undercurrant is ridiculous... particularly near bridges because the struts of the bridge cause extra underwater downward eddies and currents due to turbulance.
I also agree that you're likely to break a rib or perhaps give yourself a tension pneumothorax when you impact upon the water... and in the latter case that'll mean you won't even be able to swim back up to the surface.
If you still aren't convinced that this is a bad idea though, at least try swimming across the thames at Tower Bridge a few times to get an idea of what you're going to be dealing with... and then try Blackfriars bridge first... which i believe is slightly lower.
Don't wanna piss on your adrenaline rush or anything... i just think it'd be a shame if you fucked yourself up.

Dropping an object beforehand to break the surface tension of the water is pointless.
The surface tension of teh water is a function of its density and viscosity... so will make no discernable difference.
It's a bit like the distinction between hitting flat concrete and concrete with a slight round-shaped pit in it.

How would this jump be more likely to break my pneumothorax thingymajig than any other bigger jump?
If it really is only 30 feet, surely it'll be smaller than jumping in from a 10m diving board...
As for the crap in the river, we'll have a small motor boat on hand to get me out asap, and an appartment very close by to ower immediately, plus we'll be wearing wetsuits.
Are the undercurrents so bad that there is a possibility of drowning, as obviously I'd rather that didn't happen...
Any video of afromentioned stevo/dirty sanchez jump?
Can't see it being much worse than that video earlier, and they looked fine (water looked quite dirty too...).

Although it doesn't look it, the Thames is very tidal and turbulent.
Also, the road level of Tower Bridge is a fair bit higher than 10meters... for a start, the tidal effect causes the level of the Thames to fluctuate by around 7meters on high spring tide.

As i say... don't want to be a killjoy coz it sounds like a lot of fun... i'd just do a bit more research if i were you and perhaps try to speak to someone who's done it before.
I have a mate who used to work in the City Of London police... and now works in the private sector... if you like I can give him a bell during the week and find out what the chances of you dying are.

Yer, that's why I was asking people one here first, in the hope like someone like you would actually know something about rivers and shiz, as I'm a bit clueless on tides etc.
As far as the height goes, it's not a problem for me.
The dirty river isn't too much of a concern either, as I have jumped into the Seine in Paris before which is probably worse and have a shower nearby to wash in straight away and we'll be wearing wetsuits.
If you could have a word with your mate that would be ace.
Also, if anyone knows anything about currents etc would be helpful. I'm a big lad and a srong, confident swimmer if that helps...
Any video or testimonials of people who've done it would be awesome too.
Cheers.
