How do you know we would? All religions have some sort of rules to live by. For example, the ten commandments.

However, you may be right, maybe human nature could dictate what is right and wrong without religion.

Well i don't know that we would, and i don't know that we wouldn't. Thats my point.

I'd like to think that eventually empathy/sense would have come through. I'm agnostic, i don't fear god, yet I don't feel a need to kill everything. I hate the idea that people are good because of a fear of god, when i know that we are capable of doing good without fearing a god.

Try talking to a muslim and criticising Islam... it'll put that statement right into context. Some muslims are quite happy to discuss the more controversial topics in relation to their faith, but I've found that the majority completely fly off the handle.

As a starter for ten, you could go for:

"If the prophet Mohammed had sex with his child wife Aisha when she was 9 years old, surely that makes him a peado?"
"If Islam is a Religion of Peace, why do so many want to kill me."

reading a book at the moment called 'what is good' by A.C. Grayling. Covers where ethics evolved from, in both religion and lack of. Makes some very good points, though it doesn't back religion very fairly.

"Another answer standardly offered is that one should obey God because God is good. The problem with this answer is that if what is good is what God says is good, and if what it says is good _is_ good *because* it is itself good, then we have moved in a circle. The goodness of God, if God is good, is something that attatches to God in virtue of some fact other than that of its being God"

There are soo many arguements in the book that have just destroyed any chance of their being an involved god (in any way that would make any logical sense), but I'm not gonig to sit here and type them.

But as an agnostic who has always refused to commit myself,. this book has brought me close to athiesm (sp?)

I can almost prove that if there is a god, then he isn't an involved one (as in there is no deliberate interaction with our world). Whether there is a higher force floating around doing it's own thing, who knows. Would be nice to think so

I don't need to prove anything. I'm not on a mission to stamp on peoples faith. I find it deeply upsetting that when I'm dead thats it and I wish I could believe in an afterlife.

In answer to Blacksun's original question, I didn't even ask anything particularly deep. I simply asked her why she thought that a priest who will have no first hand experience of marriage is qualified to give lessons on marriage to engaged couples.

After the reacton from that simple question, I decided if I wanted to make it out alive, any further questioning would be unwise.

There is still room for a God in modern creation theory, i.e., the Big Bang and evolution. The Big Bang theory has even been ratified as compatible with Catholicism. After all, what happened before the Big Bang is inherently unknowable, so there may well be a God who started it all.

Also I heard an interesting theory about fate, in I think 'Short History of Nearly Everything' by Bill Bryson. Basically Heisenberg's Uncertainty Priciple states that you can never know the exact velocity and the exact location of a particle, which means basically that nothing is completely predictable to us. But if God is omniscient then he would be able to know this, so the whole evolution of the Universe would have been know by God. I probably haven't explained it that well but I thought it was interesting.
