How much are they worth? I know, it's a dull question - is it somthing like œ400? Isn't the xbox 360 like, AMAZING?

If you want one, then they are worth the money.

not worth the money for the standard of the 360 at the moment. A guy i know works on games for EA in London and he says at the moment the ps3 has no noticeable difference in quality at the moment and with the price tag you might as well get the 360 as it is much smaller and if you want a big gaming machine wait for the elite version that has a 120GB hard drive double the size of the PS30
-
PS3 is a waste of money, and I've always prefered PSs to Xboxs, it's just the PS3 is ridiculously expensive.0
-
For what you get the ps3 is very cheap, demonstrated by the fact that sony make a massive loss on every console.
The PS3 is obviously a waste of money if you don't want one but if its what you want then it's a steal.

It's got hardware-level clustering. Does it get any better?
As a games console, currently, it's not a lot. Because there's not a lot that uses it yet.
As an alarmingly powerful little box of silicon and copper, it's practically everything.

One of my mates was saying that, because of the way cell processors work they are not very good for gaming? They can have incredibly good physics, but actual graphics are all down to one cell which also has to do a lot of extra work? Or something along those lines, i tuned out.
But apparently Cells are immense at simple calculations, and so should have cured cancer by next week. The PS3's have already over taken PC's in the amount of results returned to the cancer curing people. Again i tuned out, so i may be wrong.

TBH, i've ignored pretty much all of the game-related side of the PS3. The beauty of the cell is that it is itself a cluster of cores (7 IIRC), with one dedicated to management. So it's got ferociously good paralell processing power. It's also designed for clustering and pairing, rather than persuaded to work with it (a la x86).
Sony aren't marketing it as a games console so much as a home PC. The hardware's completely open, and there's a sony-sponsored Linux dev team for it, so apps should be really easy to come by (and develop).
I don't see why they couldn't add a graphics adaptor (like PCs have) to do the image processing, though. But I'm incredibly ignorant of the system.
I do very much want a multipack of 7 ps3s. I'd have so much fun with them.

I think they tried, and that was the idea at first. But they could not do it, so in the end had to get ATI in to sort out the graphics.

Its just a higher capacity disk. Its useful to game developers as they can fit all regions of a game on to one disk, so they don't need to manufacture different disks. Its useful to consumers because you can watch Hi-def content. Its useful to Sony because they are difficult to make and often break...oh hang on...

That's a bit moot, really. It's like saying that a DVD is better than a CD because you can get WMA, MP3 and OGG files on it. There's no need for the whole multi-region business, it's just there as an excercise in the flawed application of copyright protection.
The only real bonus (as with practically every other development of storage media) is that it's a lot bigger than the previous incarnation.

i would much rather spend it on either a new bike or parts because i know it would get well used.
Dont rate the PS3, its to much for a games console but my mate has a 360 which is really good!

Yeah, but its not *just* a games console. You are allowed to load your own OS on to it, which makes it a f*ck off powerful PC.

yea but woulden't you rather go and buy a new pc for the same price?
online games are mostly free which is better than paying œ69 for 1 game!

Yes, but the PS3 is *far* more powerful than most PC's (especially œ400 PC's). Seeing as they have hacked the 360 already, i doubt it'll be long before we can get free PS3 games. Which will be far superior to 'online games'.
So no, I wouldn't rather buy a PC.

It goes sound like a box of magic to me, I'm not so PC litterate, but i like game play and dvd's, i also need a new pc for the new place, so it could be worthy. I'll look into this more

I didn't know you could put your own OS on there.

Yeah, it's an entirely open hardware platform. Sony are offering SDKs, too, I think.
They're certainly helping yellow dog linux port to the cell.

Well, Linux. Its not like OSX or Windows are going to be available for it. It runs Linux already, and even has an option for you to install your own OS.
I *think* Big Red S was talking about building an operating system that supports cell processors. As they are really new, very little is known about them.

meh, didnt know you could put your own OS onto it. as it stands though, i dont see it is very good value atm, especially at 425. in a year or so it may be worht it when the prices have come down and sony have soprted the inevitable niggles with it.

You can put your own (choice of) OS onto most hardware.
Depending on what that choice is, obviously. Linux tends to be ported to most things with a hard drive, and NetBSD tends to be ported to everything else as well.

I Didn't understand a lot of this thread, but the bit about Blueray fitting all reigions onto one disc, Why? 360 is 1 region only, seems to make more sense to me. However, the rest of it, PS3 sounds impressive, but so did the Titanic.

I've been thinking for buying one for ages. Seen a few second hand for œ350 with a game or two. Gotta HD LCD tv so I'd like a Blueray or HD-DVD player and the consoles are still the cheapest way of doing it.
I had an Xbox360 but didn't really get on with it. Probably get a PS3 in Autum, don't need another excuse not to go for a ride after work, lol.

360's have the HD-DVD drives now
Although they are like œ140!
