Hey all, summer's coming so I'm after a camera for taking some riding pics. I have absolutly no clue when it comes to a camera, I currently use a 3.2mp nikon coolpix camera, I really like the sport setting on it because I don't have to pan it etc to get a clear shot (as long as its light) for example it got this last summer http://photo.pinkbike.com/photo/920/pbpic920269.jpg .
Anways I'll spend œ150, or maybe œ200 if it's really worth it. So basically anyone got any suggestions for a camera that'll take clear crisp shots and thats got a decent sports mode? This looks alright http://tinyurl.com/2guajn any thoughts?

To be honest, you're better off with a Coolpix than the Fuji S series. Compact digitals have come a LONG way in the last 2-3 years and now perform as well as the prosumer style digital cameras such as those by Fuji... With the added bonus of being more compact.
If you're really looking for an upgrade I'd suggest this badboy.
You won't know what it means, but trust me you'll be thankful for the f/2.8 lens, keeps the shots sharp especially for riding. Plus the image stabiliser helps there too, won't find that on the Fuji's either.

I took a picture a while ago of my mates face and when I sent it to a friend he said that the camera focused on the background and not her face. That confused me cos her face was in the dead center of the photo. How do you get the camera to focus on different things?

After a digital camera, have around œ200 to spend. Been looking at the Fuji Finepix 6500, had a play with one a while ago.
Any other suggestions, i know JHT has been looking at the cheaper version. The S6500 looks to have a good spec.

With regards to shutter lag, there's an easy way to combat it on pretty much every digital camera.
And that little secret is the half-press.
Must shutter release buttons will automatically focus and pre-determine the settings if you press the shutter button about half way down, you will feel some kind of resistance before the button clicks fully. If you press it down to this point then when you finally click the button the photo will be taken instantly. It even works on phone cameras with autofocus.
It's safe to say that I do this instinctively on every single photo I take, it's THAT useful.

Well I went for the S5600 in the end, was going to go for the coolpix, but I saw the fuji for œ109 at an asda and went for it. Well I can say I'm properly chuffed with it [:D], went riding today and got some great photos (well 6, I forgot to buy a memory card *sigh), great range of settings, features and the manual settings are class, it got clear crisp action shots, I'd REALLY recommend the S series.
O ye thanks for replying Mike D

My first Dig prosumer (never bothered with compacts) was the S6000 2yrs ago. An excellent cam for the price.
Good range of functions and reasonable quality. The mpeg movie option is quite good too, there are some vids of MTBing on my website taken on the S6000.
Dec06 I decided to go back to SLRs and bought a Canon 400D DSLR. 10meg res and a multitude of settings - too many to mention here - Took some recent shots in the carribean and at Wharncliffe Woods yesterday (Sun 1st APr)
No noticable shutter lag on this DSLR approx 10ms or 15ms)
Recent Pics from Wharncliffe DH section
Shutter-lag is a problem with most low-end (budget) cameras, it's why I changed to DSLRs. Biggest problem is carrying the cam and keeping it safe while riding. I'm investing in some camera armour, lol. No, really I am.Dave - Spin instructor

I wouldnt call the S5600 a Dig Prosumer thats around the level of D200s, EOS 5D etc. I'd call it a bridge camera, ideally what someone should have when going from compact to SLR.
Biggest problem with a DSLR to is you need lots of shiny expensive bits to make it truely versatile. Flashes, Tripods, variety of lenses, wireless Slave units etc
Im just pricing up my next lot of stuff to get when I go away to the states, œ1800ish at the moment *ouch*

No Glyn, "prosumer" digital cameras are ones with the kind of features you'd expect on a DSLR but have a fixed lens and lower price tag. Such as the Fuji S9000 or the Samsung Digimax Pro815.
Prosumer refers to the gap that you mention though, the gap between consumer digital cameras and SLRs.
I just sold my fisheye, I'm waiting to find out whether Nikon are going full-frame before deciding what lens to get as a replacement. Either the 12-24mm f/4 or if it's full frame then go all-out for the 14mm f/2.8. My bank are going to hate me.

1.5 is the conversion factor. With full frame sensors you get true 135 format focal lengths, whereas with the APS-C sized sensor that Nikon use you effectively multiply a lenses focal length by 1.5.
Hence the 10.5mm fisheye works out as the same as a true 16mm fisheye.
It's good for wildlife and sports photography.
You'll like those lenses, but one thing... Make sure you get cheapo flashes too, last thing you want is 300 quids worth of flash taken out by a rider. Plus it means you can get more!

Yeah Sb600s are like $200 when I can get a Sunpak/Metz alternative for half that nearly.

I've looked on google etc and have drawn a blank.
I have an IXUS 65 and was wondering if there is a pov cam I could get which might plug into an auilliary socket so I can use it as the main unit.
I've probably drawn a blank as it wont exist.....

Hello there, I have been doing a photography course in sixth forum and i am loving it. I currently have the Canon 350D and i find it really easy to use. Some day i want to be a photographer for a sporting magazine, weather that would be biking/skating/bmx anything. What would i need to do to become a photographer in a sports magazine. I plan to take sporting photography in uni, is this enough?
I have added some of my pictures below... Can you please tell me if they are good enough to be in a magazine?

To be quite honest, those pics are piss poor.
Goes to show Doing a photography course doesnt make a good shooter, they just seem bland and well boring to me.
Just a degree isnt enough, you'll need experience to to back up what you learn at uni, From what I read a while back in a surf magazine a lot of the surf photographers do it on the side as a hobby, like most of the BMX ones like benson, kung etc, they all shoot well but have other jobs or a job in the industry but not mainly as a Bike photographer I know benson is a studio assistant.
The dream of been a fully paid shooter just for bikes is a very hard one to achieve.

Not sure on CF card prices but I think they may be cheaper that xd cards, but there still pretty cheap, I just picked up a 1gb fuji xd card for œ20.

The dual card slot on the S9500 is useful, but I'd personally go for Compact Flash cards out of the two. They're cheaper, faster, more easily available and it sounds silly but less likely to get lost... Their larger size is a bonus. Plus they're tough as hell.
Just checked and an 8Gb Sandisk Extreme IV costs just œ90 from UK based eBay shops with plenty of feedback. Whoa.

Lo all again, had to take the s5600 back recently but I have also developed quite a love for photography, and I got paid today, slightly more than I originally presumed, so I'm after a dslr, ony a cheap one like, but I have no more than œ350, and my choices are a canon eos 350d for œ320 refurb with 2gb cf card, œ319 for a nikon d40 new or œ280 for a 'box opened returns' olympus e500, I'm swinging to the nikon as a mate has it and it really does take quality pics, but I also like the look of the canon, any ideas? Thanks [:)].

Even though I am a Nikon user, don't get the D40. As it doesn't have a lens drive motor the only lenses it can auto-focus with are the DX lenses. Which is crap if you want to get a 50mm or a decent tele lens.
Best bet is go for the Olympus, lightweight, compact and uber sensor quality. Do it.

www.MikeDeere.co.uk

0 -
Well I was going to go for the olympus, but upon closer inspection I found it didn't have a decent warranty just a 3 month jobby, same with the canon, so I went into jessops today and bought a new d40, I love it [:)].
