2024 UK politics - now with Labour in charge

Or if they far enough to the right, they appear to be related to Attila the Hun.

To repeat, I don't think they are nasty. I do think they pulled a clever trick to sell Mitterrand-style big state socialism to right wing voters.

I do. A bit.

It does wind me up the way they have suddenly realised so much is wrong in the country that needs solving.

Who, Labour or the Tories?

The Tories - Labour have been saying it for ages, just don't seem to want to do much about it now they have the chance. No rush, guys.
I'm starting to think that the winter fuel thing, and possibly the row back on the non-doms is just being mega sensible so that the markets aren't spooked when they change the fiscal rules. This could just be hopium though.

It will be an interesting communication challenge to pivot from "Black hole! Black hole! We're all doomed unless we tax everything that moves" to "Well actually we've got an extra £50b pa to spend on shiny new projects".
Not saying the switch isn't a good idea. I've often thought that "the markets" would likely be reasonably tolerant of borrowing to fund coherent infrastructure projects.

It will obviously be leapt on as "You've got money for railway lines in 10 years but nothing for granny's heating this winter?" but they'll have to suck it up.

My thoughts on the budget - It’s not happened yet so I refuse to get my knickers in a twist, far less make life changing decisions.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Good god man if you haven't started packing to leave the country it will be too late.

I’ll have my pick of mansions by the sound of things.

Surely you need to move somewhere warm now they’re taking away your winter fuel payment? That’s before they even start on your Boomer pension millions!

Maybe he could get an article on his impending relocation in the Telegraph.

Hate to break the stereotypes but those boomer millions are just a pipe dream for most (?) outside the SE. We could afford our houses though. 😉

I wonder if the telegraph has considered relocating. To 1984.

House prices will surely plummet if all the rich folks leave. Always a silver lining. 😂

Rural Portugal seems to offer excellent value.
That's my plan. Lisbon is nice. So is Porto. Anywhere within 2 hours will do.

Too hot for me as a permanent location. Not to mention the Brexit bonus 90 day thing. Even this country is too hot in the summer. Could do with sunnier though. I really need 2 homes, can’t see it happening though.

I think you’re lying, some bloke on the internet told more all retired people are millionaires.

This country? Do you live in Spain or the like.

This country. 25C and sunny is my upper comfort level. Ideal would be the southern Med October to April, home May to September.

My concern is that climate chaos is going to lead to some 'interesting' weather in hotter climes - more forest fires in summer, more catastrophic summer storms with destructive hail, and not the more generally more settled winter weather of the past. It's certainly been a weird year in my bit of France, with 300% of the normal spring rainfall, the whole first half of the year never settling properly (it's normally vaguely reliable apart from around April), and autumn's broken early with snow on the peaks in September.
tl;dr I'd be doing some careful thought about what might happen over the next 20 years in anywhere more exotic than the UK, and considering specific risks... don't live in a forest, ever, and look at flood risks, amongst others.

Bodmin, the town, should form part of every Tory parliamentary candidate's education. A six month period between September and March would turn half to labour candidates and most of the rest would leave policics.

A former colleague now runs her practice in Portugal and London, commuting back and forth. Countryside looks very pretty if you can tolerate the travel.

Which is mostly why I’ve come to the conclusion to stick.
The fact that my wife will never leave the grandchildren had absolutely nothing to do with it. 😉😂

Glad I did it 11 years ago, when I was younger, BFB ('before' and 'Brexit' are two of the words), and before the wobbly climate seemed to be quite as, er, wobbly. 'Glad', because it's still fantastic, and I plan to make the most of it while I still can. Should be about 18-19 weeks this year... end of salaried work from Christmas, just left with self-employed stuff, as I started my working life. No cows involved now though.
I think we might have gone off on a tangent though...

Gone off tangent? TF says I. I’ll let you decide the acronym.
