Quite. So this guy has gone from a guaranteed job for the next 30+ years to possibly not even getting on wikipedia.

I think it is more a case that they used to be able to influence voting. Now, with social media, their influence has significantly diminished but they are having trouble accepting the reality. The only time I see what the papers are saying is from people linking on here or the headlines as I pass the newstand at my local shop.

Presumably so long as she keeps to a different set of self imposed fiscal rules, it'll be fine.

I really don't think the papers influence voting as much as people think.
I think it's a crutch centrist and left-wing people use to make themselves feel better. It's much nicer to think that there's some evil overlord (Murdoch etc) who wants evil things and pollutes the minds of people, rather than the reality which is lots of people think that and the papers are trying to attract their attention.

I have no idea how reliable this one is but it's the one I've been looking at over the past couple of weeks:

Both of those bits of analysis by seat give Corbyn any votes. It is considered a strong Labour hold.

So the Leftie bogeyman is going to rig the system by increasing democracy? Much better to stick with the current lot that have tried to rig the system so that their diminishing number of old voters have an easier ride, a quick look at acceptable voter ID shows how they have actually tried to rig the system rather than what may happen. It's weird how they keep trying to project things they have already done onto Labour as examples of bad things they will do (increase tax, increase immigration, attempt to 'rig' who can vote...)

Betting odds are interesting. Farage is 8/1 to be the next Tory leader. Corbyn favourite for his seat.

JRM previously admitted that their attempt to help sure up votes with voter ID had backfired. So it's not like changing rules is a slam dunk for incumbents.

Still two weeks to go 🤣🤣🤣

Stop. It's too much now

I'm struggling to keep up.
So the second mp/candidate who is being investigated for betting on the election date is married to the campaign director.
It's just mind blowing how stupid some people are.

. . . the net result being that their Director of Campaiging has stood down with 2 weeks to go until a GE.
It's the stuff of novels

I think it's probably over exaggerated, but I do think it's an issue. My dad spent the last years of his life moaning that his oldest friend had started reading the daily mail a little too much. My Tory friend suddenly became quite socialist when they went on Reddit a little too often.

It's bizarre , how difficult would it be to tip off a few mates and get them to place sensibly sized bets if you're that way inclined?

Didn't the first person flagged for this bet £100 at 5-1? I found that ridiculous, opening yourself and the party up to so much grief for such a small reward.

Yes, at least Michelle Mone got a yacht out of it - that's the level you should be aiming for.

We've had zero leaflets/visits from the Conservatives, meanwhile from the lib dems we've had this in the last week or so.
I think the Tories have completely given up here. It's a remarkable turnaround - Zac Goldsmith was mp in 2010, 2015 and 2017.

Do you think they didn't consider the legality of it or just thought it wouldn't be noticed? Not great either way...

Hah I just realised the Tory candidate in trouble for betting is standing in my constituency.
Darren Jones is the Labour candidate so she was already a long shot.

Are they annoyed about the stupidity of placing the bet, or that it was for such a small amount? The stories about your workplace makes me think the latter is more likely, anywhere else it would be the former.
