I don't tend to notice cars. I did see a pink ferrari the other day which stood out. Definitely not a stealth car. Google tells me the driver (an attractive women in her 20s) mistook a bus lane for a parking spot.

Surely knowing that Citroen make cars is pretty base level knowledge? Even if you wouldn't recognise a Citroen in the street.

If we are talking about cycling kit - isn't it more or less impossible to be a cyclist and not have something from one team or other...

I did know that, but... I didn't know they sponsored AG2R!

I have a fair amount of ex pro Mitchelton Scott kit - does that count?

When choosing who to use for my pension when I changed jobs and no longer had a company scheme I got got some recommendations on Cake Stop and eventually went with AJ Bell partly as it was the easiest to set up and partly because I was aware of them through their ToB sponsorship.

Nothing to do with cycling sponsorship but we did have some Quickstep flooring briefly. When I opened the first box we realised it was going to be way too dark so it went back and we had to swallow a restocking fee :/ The perils of choosing stuff in a brightly illuminated showroom...

Used Mapei tile adhesives and grout several times, but again not a conscious choice - it was just what the tile place was stocking at the time

Pretty sure sponsorship / advertising works the other way around too. I can't be the only person whose reaction to Transitions lenses is "hell no"
  • It's only by chance that I find out the products / services offered by cycling sponsors that aren't already high profile. Most of them are just names. Only by reading the posts above did I discover that Mapei is a grouting manufacturer.

The one that really sticks in the memory is "Leakygas" for obvious reasons.

I still don't know what La Vie Claire, Z, Mercatone Uno and ADR do / did, and it was by informed guesswork that I found out that Banesto was a financial services company.

I was somewhat disappointed to find out that "Wanty" and "Gobert" were separate organisations, rather than just being "Wanty Gobert". I obviously have no idea what either of them do.

Thankfully, some sponsors give a helping hand, such as Saxo Bank, and Total Energies. Lidl Trek is obviously the most helpfully named team.

La Vie Claire - French health food chain
Z - French kids clothing chain
Mercatone Uno - Italian supermarket chain
ADR - AD Renting, but I can't remember what they rented, might have been TVs

Silence-lotto, who was a team sponsor about 15 years ago, was an anti-snoring medication.

I think DSM make Vitamin C, only because they have a manufacturing plant near me that I used to work in, and that was previously owned by Roche (no, not Stephen). They make the effervescent "Beroca" style lozenges.

Several years ago Cycling Weekly listed what the team sponsors did in a pre tour article. Surprisingly interesting ( anorak mode).
Easy to tell this is a rest day!

Went camping through Vacansoleil a few years back in Brittany. It was partly their sponsorship that led to me them booking with them. We'd stayed at th site a few years before through Eurocamp but when we'd tried to book again there was nothing available. I remembered seeing the next row on the site had been run by Vacansoleil which I only remembered because they were sponsors at the time so went to their website and they had what we wanted.

That's how marketing works, I doubt many of is consciously buy something because they sponsor a sports team but we've ended up with brand awareness that can influence a decision. Bad advertising / association can definitely lead me to not using a product though and I suspect that's why sponsors run a mile when a team gets into some controversy.

I meant kit by companies who sponsor teams - Garmin, Wahoo, Shimano, SRAM, Giant, Specialized etc etc etc. It would be hard to get far as a cyclist without buying anything from a company that sponsors a team!

Very few of them are title sponsors these days though. Trek are the only one in the men's World Tour, a couple of others in the women's.

When I lived in France I specifically got my bank account with Caisse d'Epargne because they sponsored the cycling team

I drive a Skoda Superb, but so far my request for t'missus to drive me around while I stand out of the sunroof and direct cyclists has fallen on deaf ears.

I also shop in Lidl but that is because I am a tightarse not because of sponsorship.

Only if that was as a result of Pharma's sponsorship rather than emulating Festina*.

    *other shady teams were/are available.

Prior to this thread, I think the only sponsors who I actually knew what they sold were Ineos Grenadiers (from this forum, not sure I have ever seen the car itself) and Alpecin (from the relentless advertising on Eurosport).

You didn't know Lidl was a supermarket chain, Citroen a car manufacturer, UAE was a country and Trek make bikes?
Bahrain is more self explanatory than you might initially think as well.

False advertising though, what has the country ever won to be called victorious?
