Needs Philipsen to screw up if he’s gonna get it as he’s head and shoulders above the rest

Cav gets his head and shoulders lower though, limbo style and top speed with it.

Cav showed he's still in with a good chance.

Real shame he had gear issues, would have been a very interesting result

I think the closer we get to Paris the greater his chances. Cav has the experience in his legs and his head. He’s battled through 3 week Tours more than the other sprinters.

Heart says yes, head says probably.

Philipsen to serve across and take his wheel out on the Champs, on his last chance to do it, when he's had a perfect leadout and is coming through like an express train. You read it here first.

He’ll get a stage, where’s everyone’s positivity? The worst that can happen is that I’m wrong

I reckon he'd have had that today. He's got the legs, he just needs those marginal bits of luck.

Not sure he's got the speed to beat Jasper, but he's got the experience of GT racing and the nous to position himself that he's got a good chance

According to the data people, Cavendish reached 74.7 kph. That seems quick to me.

He was badly positioned and got lucky with a gap but it was probably 75m too early to go.

He doesn’t have the double kick he used to have.

I’ve not seen a sprint where he’s coming in in a good position and I don’t think that’s down to him but that’s gonna make it probably too hard for him to win.

Not least as Philipsen is both the fastest and Alpecin have an outrageous leadout.

    You mean Alpecin have MvdP!

Not sure Cav was lucky with the gap. In the years I’ve watched Cav, it seems he manages to creates the gaps he needs where others couldn’t.

I think he reads the finishes well and understands well which side will open up. I think it was Ed Pickering (editor of Rouleur) who was saying yesterday that he interviewed Cavendish about a month after the 2016 Worlds in Doha, where he lost to Sagan. He was still a) furious that he didn't win and b) incredulous that the sprint didn't open up on the left hand side, which is where he thought it would.

Even Cavs detractors must say that is a particularly cruel end for the greatest sprinter of all time (imo)

It’s why the record is so impressive. Very hard to win one.

Gutted for him. Wanted him to win one and even if he didn't, to at least have the chance for a lap of honour round Paris at the end.
