Drones may be become more of a thing I guess but I can't imagine them buzzing along next to.a rider
"If I was a 38 year old man, I definitely wouldn't be riding a bright yellow bike with Hello Kitty disc wheels, put it that way. What we're witnessing here is the world's most high profile mid-life crisis" Afx237vi Mon Jul 20, 2009 2:43 pm

Don't actually have to imagine, it's already been done

Having read the back pages of the AAIB's monthly update (the bit dedicated to drones), I would allow them anywhere near either the race or the crowds that follow them. It's an endless litany of "drone wandered off on its own and then inexplicably fell from the sky. Not enough wreckage to guess why"

They have used them in downhill skiing and I think one narrowly missed a competitor.

I don't think drones are really an option in road races. If it's a closed circuit then that's different but unless a military style drone is used then the speed and distance covered in road races would be too much for the current ones.

The number of camera moto's will probably come down when more riders have action cameras fitted to their bikes during races. Obviously there are limitations with battery and connections but these are improving all the time so think it's a realistic option in the future.

I think fans need to take more blame, or partial blame. If they didn't encroach on to the road then there would be no issues in most locations. Although what makes cycling special is the proximity to the riders, so it's hard to balance.

I remember that - the day before the tt they had it buzz around him on a road stage. Insane.

Just saw a moto clip a rider in the break in the Tour De France Femmes Avec Sponsorname. She didn't go down, but it was close

They do still use them for downhill ski racing, some brilliant images that really do give the impression of the speeds involved. They also use them for mountain bike racing, again brilliant images.

They use drones in MTB coverage all the time these days, chasing riders through the trees it's ace
