I listen to Wake Me Up When September Ends regularly and sing along but have never really thought about the lyrics.

How have you got this far with no mention of Nick Drake? Pick more or less anything off Pink Moon. Bleak, sparse, I mean, the poor guy killed himself a couple of years later.

As someone has mentioned, Nick Drake was king of the miserablists. As was Elliott Smith... Don't stab yourself in the chest unless you've got some serious demons. Same applies to Mark Linkous aka Sparklehorse.
