Your favourite miserable songs

Just remembered Chris Isaak, Wicked Game. Just listened to it and now all kinds of out of sorts.1

Another stone cold Radiohead entry with the proper version of Spinning Plates:

Three pages in and no mention of The Verve. The Drugs Don't Work and Bittersweet Symphony definitely deserve a place here.1

Three of my "favourites"
Bring me the horizon - Strangers
https://youtu.be/FsNGxsrcZas
Greenday - Wake me up when September ends
https://youtu.be/NU9JoFKlaZ0
Imagine Dragons - Demons
https://youtu.be/mWRsgZuwf_8
Greenday is probably the one though (if I actually listen to it properly, it doesn't end well) especially with the family stuff we had to deal with last year.0 -
I listen to Wake Me Up When September Ends regularly and sing along but have never really thought about the lyrics.
Another favourite of mine is Forever Autumn by Justin Hayward (from War of the Worlds). I'd never heard this live version until looking for a link just now

So very very many to choose from. All very sad.
Favourite possibly is Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Nocturama - "Still In Love"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9phk7ckSIs
and Nothing But Thieves - "Love, Please Stay". The vocals give me shivers down my spine.

Anything by The Smiths. Not Morrisey solo as he's a Tw@t.
Sisters of Mercy - "Marianne"
The Cure - "Faith"
Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

If Berlin isn't miserable enough for you, try this:rick_chasey said:Not all of these are quite miserable enough for my liking.

Meat Is Murder has music that is thoroughly miserable to go with the lyrics too.0

Good choice but I think this pips it.... Very bleak lyrics.laurentian said:Transatlanticism - Death Cab for Cutie
(not necessarily my favourite miserable song but one that sprang to mind)
DCFC - What Sarah Said

And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
…..
But you're older
Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter
Never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught
Or half a page of scribbled lines

and the Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs
This is the second movement, I think the most poignant-sounding movement, but it could be any of the three movements - in the third a mother laments the killing of her son, lying in a ditch she doesn't know where.

You're the light wiping out my batteries; You're the cream in my airport coffee's.0

There are lot of broken hearts here for sheer pessimism and despair I recommend Boomtown Rats:-
Rat Trap
Diamond Smiles
I Don’t like Mondays
etc.
Not added the links but easily findable on Youtube.0 -
A lot of the songs mentioned in this thread are very dark but I don't think that is the same thing as miserable. Anyway here's another dark one, featuring the lovely Kylie out of character.

I'll put some effort in and try to think of a truly miserable song.0 -

How have you got this far with no mention of Nick Drake? Pick more or less anything off Pink Moon. Bleak, sparse, I mean, the poor guy killed himself a couple of years later.
Little Green by Joni Mitchell
In My Darkest Hour - Megadeth
Plus some of the ones above - Fade to black, Everybody hurts, Nothing compares to you (Sinead o C), Barber's adagio for strings.0 -

After that interlude, here's a really miserable song. I'm so tired by Fugazi

So for me this is standard fare which I guess shows where I am on this.kingstongraham said:After that interlude, here's a really miserable song. I'm so tired by Fugazi

I like the song but the way he hammers the keys really annoys me.0 -
This is miserable and fantastic... if you're into scrunchy harmonic changes, it's a corker.

As someone has mentioned, Nick Drake was king of the miserablists. As was Elliott Smith... Don't stab yourself in the chest unless you've got some serious demons. Same applies to Mark Linkous aka Sparklehorse.

Just rewatched on the Piano Room, and found a fuller Pink performance than the 2 own songs plus 1 cover song episode. Good. Inc the Nothing Compares 2 U. And it's almost 7 years since Prince passed 😳Pross said:

Yeah the one I watched was on BBC2 and included an interview with Jo Whiley. She was really good, would love to see her live.orraloon said:

Not quite miserable as it’s rich people problems but still a top top song:
