For something a bit different, although not my taste, Billie Holiday has some pretty depressing stuff.0

Hurt, both versions, are pretty miserable. But the Johnny Cash one takes it by virtue of the rather poignant video I reckon.0

Hurt by Nine Inch Nails (and also the Jonny Cash cover)

Metallica do a pretty good line in this category
One (absolutely incredible live when I saw then a few years ago)

Probably the one I listened to most with the lights out in my teenage pit was Fade To Black

This was an answer on Pop Master this morning (I don't think I'd heard of it before).rick_chasey said:Nothing makes me feel better than a really good miserable/depressing/despairing song really hitting the mark.

Good song, and there's the tragedy of war which is right miserable.0 -
Surprised Lou Reed or Velvet Underground hasn't come up yet. He'd make happy birthday sound miserable.

^ Brothers in Arms is another cracker and always reminds me of the series Civvies from the early 90s (which was also quite depressing!)0

I'll be surprised if anyone listens to this right through, but it's the most miserable thing: Purcell's Funeral Sentence 'In The Midst Of Life We Are In Death', written in 1694 for Queen Mary's funeral, and used just one year later for Purcell's own, at the age of 36.
It's really worth a listen though - hear how he uses some really discordant harmonies to heighten the pain & death... it's just the most extraordinary thing, even if it hasn't got a disco beat.

Tears In Heaven probably deserves a mention here too.
Probably the most depressing song I’ve ever heard but not one I like is The Boy That Santa Claus Forgot. The first time I heard it I was waiting the uplifting happy ending (spoiler - it never comes!)0 -
Yes, remember seeing the J Cash video back in the day and going quiet...Pross said:

Didn't his wife, seen in video, June Carter pass away about 3 months after the filming? And the man himself just a few months later?0 -
