Best pop song of the 20th Century

But joking aside, it's sad that people feel the need to do that sort of thing to themselves. I'd like to look like a younger Brad Pitt (as I did in my peak years, of course) but nature dictates that I look like a greying middle aged accountant, which I guess is what I am.0

I'd forgotten Blondie.molteni_man said:Blondie - Dreaming- what a track and take a look at the energy of Clem Buerke drumming!

But my favourite from them is "Heart of glass".
The older I get, the better I was.0 -
Also went to see Belinda Carlisle at Portsmouth Guildhall last week- what a voice. Talking pop of the last century this is a great track!

Topped out at a lowly #37 in the singles chart. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -

Too many options, need some definitions.
Pop? Is 70s punk pop? Notoriety? As in... subject matter? Lyrics? Banned from radio?
God Save the Queen by the Sex Pistols. Played that quite a lot last September, for some reason.0 -

Yet another classic.0 -
I took notoriety in the case as being stuff that people of heard of (as the OP mentioned something like 'not some local indie band').orraloon said:Too many options, need some definitions.

Surely the whole point of punk was to be the antithesis of pop?0 -
One of the fun things I found with this - apart from hearing songs I forgot about again - is that the change in definition makes a difference. Were the Sex Pistols pop then? Are they now?Pross said:

If they don't count in this thread, Can we have Blink-182 in the 21st century thread?

If we are talking pure out and out 'pop' song then it is surely ABBA 'Dancing Queen' as mentioned previously. Nothing else even comes close IMO.
If we are broadening it out about to pop/rock/soul, a few of the regular all time classics spring to mind.
'Mrs Robinson'
'I Heard It Through The Grapevine'
'I Want to Hold Your Hand'
'Waterloo Sunset'
'Tutti Frutti'
'River Deep, Mountain High'
'You've Lost That Loving Feeling'

I think you need to get a shortlist for each decade before you can even begin to get a best of the century.
But pop has to be ABBA. Although I’m surprised at Dancing queen being a preference.
If any Stock, Aitken & Waterman stuff gets mentioned, someone should be shot.0 -
Actually I think one of the ABBA songs should be a winner. Question is which one?morstar said:I think you need to get a shortlist for each decade before you can even begin to get a best of the century.

Probably Waterloo or Mamma Mia for me."I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -

Hadn’t realised that was one of theirs. I’ll let you/them have that. It stands alone as a pop song.kingstongraham said:morstar said:If any Stock, Aitken & Waterman stuff gets mentioned, someone should be shot.

It was all the pre-packaged uninspiring dross they churned out. Back in the days of 4 tv channels, it was everywhere.0 -

Well, this made it to No.1 one in Billboard in 1955, to make amends.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRBSqLpbf_M
Maybe not the sort of 'pop' that Raver was thinking of, but it's more my type, even if I wasn't alive then.0 -

I'd have to say Abba should certainly be well up there, but as Stevo says, which one? I remember being in a nightclub somewhere in the early 90s, most of the music wasn't really my thing, probably too trendy for me. Last track they played was Dancing Queen, that was the only time the dance floor was packed. Blondie is another one, although I rarely watched the drumming as I was transfixed by something else.Stevo_666 said:
