I withdraw my earlier Prince submission and nominate this. He was so good.

Call On Me, Satisfaction and The Weekend we’re all early 2000s (all 2004 I believe) so should be in the other thread. To my ears they all sound similar and the videos seem to be a very similar style. Not sure if there was some dance music equivalent of Stock Aitken Waterman involved.RichN95. said:

The weirdest of that era was Boogie Pimps with Somebody To Love. I found that one a bit disturbing.0 -

Just massively compressed, especially the kick.briantrumpet said:Stevo_666 said:Call on Me by Eric Prydz probably created a bit of controversy. Great video though.

Argh - on the sound (who's listening?)... you can hear that there's some sort of crude normalisation going on if you listen on headphones - a kind of recoil after each bass drum thump.
That was the style of the time.
Daft punk were the worst for it in “one more time”
Struggle with a cheap stylised cover being considered in the top songs tbh.
In general pop music is massively compressed compared to the past. They’ve got much more sophisticated nowadays but back then they made the overcompression a stylistic feature.0 -

Compressed, thanks, that's what I meant.0 -
For those specific songs the overcompression was a style thing but yes in general.ddraver said:It's so it sounds better through a phone speaker innit? The same reason that all music these days uses a single type of drum kit.
(Or was that an "old guy being miserable" fact)
It also makes them “louder” in general.
(I have a real thing for following producers. Big hobby of mine)0 -
Compression is important. Can make a song sound punchy and tight.
More detailed compression can leave room from for all the different instruments in the mix, as well as the right eq etc0 -
Bruno mars uptown funk is probably the best mixed and produced pop song of the modern era. Vacuum tight production.0

Yeah, they've got some great songs in their collection, depending on your mood. Some great lyrics in their tunes to capture the topic at hand. One of my favourites for a catchy upbeat tune about a serious issue...briantrumpet said:I was looking at some The Police songs - there are some corkers there.

Dave Stewart of Eurythmics used to listen to the mix on a Walkman to check how most listeners would hear it.The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -

One for those that dwell on that stupid sport which people only play because they've got $h1t hands. What have feet ever made?

I went to the Oxford Dictionary for their definition of what pop music is - ‘popular music of the sort that has been popular since the 1950s, usually with a strong rhythm and simple tunes, often contrasted with rock, soul and other forms of popular music’
Not totally helpful- as noted on here for me the suggestions re ABBA are where it’s really at. For me it centres around the late 70’s and 80’s ( but I’m biased!). I also think Stevo is on to something with the Euro hit vibes which to me are the quintessential pop tunes! Giorgio Moroder is brilliant!
Does this capture Pop Music?https://youtu.be/PE1lzqJCeJ0

Actually the more I think about it this has to be done by decades. This one fits the definition/ thinking above and was huge here and across Europe too! But definitely 70’s and has another essential ingredient factor of pop which is the ‘ feel good’ nature!

Another track from my Spotify ‘ Guilty Pleasures’ playlist which I will wack on to sing along too on a grey day!0 -
A candidate for what I would call pure pop for me would be Yazz with The Only Way Is Up. Brings back good memories of various discos / parties around the time I was leaving school. Not a song I like much and even less since it got hijacked by various politicians but definitely real pop.
I’d also chuck in Erasure with Ship of Fools being a favourite and the original Tears For Fears version of Mad World.1 -

How have we made it this far without this?
