Anyone any suggestions for ultra warm knee warmers? DHB just aren't cutting it but Castelli'd up the rest of me is fine.

    Castelli? 😉
    Sorpasso Windstopper tights are niiiice.
grazie! I'm not a tights kinda guy - I'll go as long as 3/4 lenghts but wil investigatw to see what they have in the same fabric

They very much are, but at least one of the mfs is after some knee warmers apparently.

The majority of them out there are fine, and most are thicker roubaix lined type efforts - it's getting the right size that can be the challenge, I always prefer the ones with silicone on the inside top and bottom, but also a silicone strip around the thigh part, as this not only helps the warmer stay in place, but also reduces the chances of your shorts sliding up too.

Have to say I have been pretty impressed with Gripgrabs offerings (Accessories as opposed to jersey/shorts which I have not tried), but tend to only buy if they are on a decent offer.

  • I will avoid ice, so any wet roads overnight is a stay indoors. I've been out early when it froze up after I was already on the road which was not much fun at all.

In terms of kit, I do not get on with most tights. They never fit me properly as I have long thighs, so if the knee is in the right place, the pad is not. I now ride with fluffy winter bib shorts, a pair of leg warmers with a 2nd windstopper leg warmer over the top.

re leg warmer with leg warmer over the top - no restriction/riding up issues?

    Puzzled.
When it’s cold you won’t venture outside yet you need recommendations for cold weather clothing. Is your turbo set up outside, in your garden in the north of Scotland?
  • -2 yesterday. I couldn't find my ski gloves that I usually wear in sub zero temperatures and used my regular winter gloves, which just didn't hack it. very painful when riding and even worse as my hands warmed up. They were fine at +2 in the evening. I still can't find those gloves so I borrowed my daughter's car this morning. I'll be investing in new gloves before I try that again.

The problem with all Castelli bottoms is their pads aren't anatomically shaped in the THAT area, as opposed to Assos which are, so Mille GT it is for me anytime. I don't understand why Castelli and others still make them completely flat there. My package needs room.

Have to say I find the Progetto X2 pad one of the most comfy out there, and although some people do not get on with them, I would suggest more people find them comfy than not.

For my posterior it is as comfy as Rapha Pro Team II short pads, and La Passione Classic short pads.

In stark contrast I find the Castelli KISS pad one of the most uncomfortable I have ever ridden.

I've never ridden in a pair of Assos shorts - the one pair I ordered, several years ago now, so cannot remember the model etc, the cut of it was not to my liking (really low at the front) and the pad felt like a nappy, it was mahoosive :D

We're all different though, so it's a brilliant thing we have so many different approaches out there to hopefully mean there is a design out there to suit everyone.

I do wonder if the style of saddle also indicates the type of pad that will work for you, I tend to like flat Arione style saddle, with absolutely no curve at all.

I've never ridden in less than -30C. I don't mind the cold too much but my feet suffer these days and I need thick overshoes to go out. Never ride in the cold and rain unless I'm caught out.

riding in -30? as in minus thirty?

    #doublehardbastard

yes, that was in central europe riding into work but once it goes below freezing as long as it is dry and not windy it doesn't seem to make too much difference. I don't particularly like going out in the cold, today was -3C and grim but no wind so not too bad on the bike.

  • It's a bit old fashioned these days but as far as tights go I like them without pads so I can wear shorts beneath them. My nether regions appreciate the double layer.

So, why buy clothing suitable for cold weather if riding in the cold is to a stupid idea? Able to explain with words?

I rode to and from Birmingham (40 mile round trip) during the beast from the east a few years ago. I think my Garmin said -10, my phone battery went from 100% to zero in an hour just streaming the radio, my bottle froze solid in both directions and it was snowing when I got back home.

That was then, this week I deciddd to work from home because I’ve not had chance to fit the heated grips to my motorbike. Bike hasn’t been out of the garage for months ☹️

Turbo Durbo innit. It was -4 here at 1130, no going out on the bike in that thanks.
  • I was riding in shorts and a short-sleeved base layer at the weekend... at 1.7C...in the garage on the turbo.
  • My new MTB came recently, a Vitus Nucleus on a black Friday deal. I was out on it in the snow at -2°C at weekend. There's no way on gods earth anyone would have got me out on my road bikes in those conditions.

I had an absolute blast just doing a few back roads and trails, highly enjoyable. And the wind chill factor on a MTB isn't half as bad as on a road bike. The thicker tyres give me a lot of confidence too.

Wobbled in on the old MTB the last year couple of days, fat tyres at lower pressure, wide bars and flat pedals make it easier to manage when slippery. it was -4 Garmin this morning in bushy Park. But I reckon thats closer to 0 in actual degrees as it seems to underestimate somewhat. Did see one lunatic riding in shorts.

You’re winning the most manly/loopy contest atm.

New winter sexy tights and shoes arrived today, would be rude not to give them an outing tomorrow.

Will they look as sexy with a big rip down the side.
  • Was v cold in the garage yesterday evening on Zwift. Have had to put Castelli Toe Thingys on to stop feet getting too cold, but still sweat on top! I take a spare jersey out and will swap over as it can cold with the moisture.

-3 this morning. Had to walk a bit as two shaded stretches of cycle path were iced over. I’ll stick to main roads on the return leg. Wondered why I was bothering on the way but felt good when I got to work. Sexy tights survived unscathed.

Around -6 in the garage last night for 20 minute turbo session.
Chilly again this morning for my 1st commute by bike this week : -5.5. Cold but having located a pack of hand warmers I bought on a whim I think these helped stave off the expected sore fingertips for the duration of my 21km commute in.
My whole commute fortunately is all on main roads despite living in fairly rural surroundings so all were fine until the city where edges of main roads with designated cycle lanes looked pretty lethal.
  • I'm getting itchy not riding and I've ordered some studded bike tyres so that next time the mercury drops I can carry on riding into work. It's warming up this weekend though so I don't expect I'll need them until the new year. I'll be lucky to get them much before Christmas anyway with them coming from Holland.

No problems out there this morning in an alleged -3, but it is a heavily gritted bus route. Feet a bit cold - should see if I can find my shoe covers.

Nah, not worth it now. It’s warming up next week, leave them till next year.

Fair enough. I think they were largely held together with gorilla tape, and the rear zip had broken on at least one. Maybe just two pair of socks - one thick, one thin. I think I can just about still lace them up like that.
