Laporte did most of the damage and he’s possibly going to take the stage.
    Transformation is astonishing

Laporte had his first ever 3 week altitude training camp in February. It would be remarkable if he hadn't improved dramatically. Once the gap had been created by the two DSMs failing to hold the wheel (good spot, Rich), given the shambolic nature of the chase, it was inevitable that three committed and organised riders would increase that gap.

They did a VAM of about 2,200 up that climb :#

On a 1.31 km climb with 87 metres of elevation gain, VAM is meaningless.

Another crash involving Mollema, Groenewegen, Dennis and and Van Poppel.
    Dylan distanced.

Total carnage. Most teams are in total disarray, but Jumbo are at it again.
No more than 40 riders left in the first group.
Now that has split again and it's just Jumbo and about a dozen others.
Quintana being magical in the crosswinds again.

Hayter and Colbrelli dumped out the rear.
Once again the Ineos man caught out by riding at the back.

G and Rowe say in their most recent podcst that Hayter hates the fight in the pack, so might explain why he's out the back so much

Front group suddenly splits into 3.
A dozen or so in each section.
Bennett and Vlasov the latest casualties.

    Who's caught out on gc?

    Everybody. :D

Almeida and McNulty, G Martin, Schachmann and Mollema over 2 minutes behind.

Gaudu over 6 minutes down and there's still about one hour's racing.

At least Vlasov, Haig and S Yates are now back at the front.

Kruijswijk and Jorgenson hit the deck, just as the second group were about to catch the leaders.

    Jakobsen blows WVA away.
Laporte leads out and still manages third..

Almeida cuts a lonely figure, rolling across the line almost 2 minutes down.

Impressive long sprint from Mads P there
Think it's worth updating the Vikings thread for tomorrow (I like to give it a day to avoid accidental spoilers)
He's had good early season form, but he's trying to be a little careful (eg not riding Omloop het Nieuwsblad) to peak for the main cobbled races
