    No idea. I jumped from 8 to 10 speed.
    My 10 levers are the Ultra Record with Record r mech and an Ambrosio cassette*. The previous Ambrosio cassette (12-25) didn't shift well.
    The current one (12-27) does.

    So, did Ambrosio develop the cassette originally with x spacing - x being a compromise and later develop the same cassette (bar ratio differences) with a different y spacing?
    Or - to go with a majority usage (spacing) and I got lucky?

    Originally, that Record 10 was with a Chorus cassette.

    *Shimano splines, Campag spacing to fit Dura Ace CL25 wheels. They're beautiful BTW and contemporary versions new are eye watering.

    Those cassettes were as soft as custard...
    They are much better now.
    Allows me to ride Campag gears with Shimano wheels (of the 10 speed stuff).
    I was making a joke about Ambrosio(a) Devon custard...
