Apparently 4G was working just fine at the summit of the Giau, as a fan had it all set up to "watch" the final descent on ES Player.
So maybe the cameraman's phone ran out of battery.

At least in the old days we would have had a recording to watch.
Innovation making a lot of difference in this case: all worse.

Receiving a compressed stream to work on a phone isn't quite the same as transmitting a full broadcast level feed.

Reading Twitter today really shows how little (quite understandably really) most people know about the technicalities of live TV broadcast tech, and how tricky cycling coverage is in particular.
Fixed camera at a pass was doable in the 1990s even when the rest of the stage was weathered out .. that's over 20 years ago
Talk about rubbing salt into the wound.

Also, from the descent times off the Giau, it looks like Martinez must have crashed.
Two and a half minutes slower than Izagirre and Bardet.

They also posted images of both the climbs implying they were rideable.

Is the race earlier this year? Froome's break was 3 years ago today and that was later in the race so started earlier that year at least.

One week earlier, as is The Tour, because of the Olympics

    Is this true?

    Date of final stage:
    2021 - 31 May
    2019 - 2 Jun
    2018 - 27 May
    2017 - 28 May
    2016 - 29 May
    2015 - 31 May
    2014 - 1 Jun
    2013 - 26 May
    2012 - 27 May
    2011 - 29 May
    2010 - 30 May
    2009 - 31 May
    etc

Up to 2001 it finished a week later, but for the last 20 years it's not been more than 3 days later.

What was going on a number of years ago may not be relevant today. Cameras are now digital, use ip addresses etc. if the aircraft cant fly and thats how the signal gets there then it wont happen. Satellite time is expensive but does heavy cloud not affect satellites? I dont know how the military do it

That was what I thought. I know the Tour and Dauphine are earlier this year but didn't think the Giro was and that confirms it.

It feels like there have been regular issues with the highest stages in recent years (talk of shortening even if it hasn't happened, loss of pictures) but that could just be that those stages stick in your mind as it is disappointing when it happens.

damned if they do start the race and it turns into a snowfest and damned if they dont. The cloud cover was the issue the aircraft cant go. Leeds/Bradford airport has issues with this as it's the highest in England. Some details here on coverage

There’s a couple of videos on YouTube from the Giau. Love this one where the Italian fan sees the pink ef helmet of Simon Carr and thinks it’s Hugh.

Must have picked up a musette after that video. Carried it down to the finish line.

Just wanted to point out from the post above that anyone tuning in to watch the time trial on the 31st will have missed it.
The last stage is on May 30th.

Now, I have a question: where were all the drones that we were told, not so long ago, were going to revolutionise live coverage in the mountains?

The section in the AAIB's monthly summary of accident reports that might as well be titled "Drones that spontaneously combusted, fell apart, or departed unexpectedly for France - and that we don't have the resource to investigate because there's hundreds of the little sods doing it every month now" may provide a clue as to why you don't want to fly them near crowds unnecessarily just yet.

If the musette was empty, or almost, he would have been better off using it as a newspaper, instead of having it flap around.

Remco speaks after the Giau stage:

“The day was bad. In the end, two months of training was not enough to be 100% ready for this Giro. The rest day on Tuesday will do good and then we will fight during the last week. I never said I would quit the race. As long as I feel capable of going all the way, why won't I make it to Milan?“

Fair play to him use it for just putting the miles in . Hope he does not wreck himself

James Knox's audio diary on the cycling podcast is always worth a listen. Bit of insight into Evenepoel and Almeida. Also how hard it was for him (and a pretty candid opinion on the shortening of the stage - he was for it).

I was looking at the rest of my PTP picks earlier and it was hard to justify going for anyone other than Bernal on the remaining three MTFs.

The EF guys weren't messing around in the stay warm competition. 😉
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.
