Good fish and chips is a taste of heaven. Crispy light batter, fresh fish cooked to perfection, chips that have a slight crunch on the outside and are soft in the middle.

According to the guy I know, grandson of the bloke that started the first chippy, it's to do with the oil they fry in. They used to use nut oil which could stand a much higher temperature. The batter would stay thin. He blamed the Greeks for ruining things, said they started using cheap vegetable oil that had a lower flash point. The batter then expands and absorbs a lot of oil. End result being that a small piece of fish looks bigger, but is nowhere near as good.
Using nut oil nowaday would be a bit of a nighmare with all of the allergies and the lawsuits that could follow.

You missed pickled eggs and battered black pudding. Go a bit further north than me and it chips in a balm cake or with an oatcake. Tatty scallops are tatty fritters around my area.

North of the Midlands? :) Thats where you get proper fish n chips.
and some more, NE coast, where the wind rips the skin from your bones.
There was a good chippy 100 yards from my folks old house. Top stuff, especially with scraps.

I was told I look like Peter Capaldi twice on Friday, I'm not sure that's a compliment.
The barnet is causing consternation among male friends on bookface, but I've had a couple of nice comments from womenfolk. So whilst I was going to get it clipped today I might leave it to annoy the slapheads.

Ex-model here, soz. Seriously! At uni, I made great money as a model for clothing store catalogues, did some catwalk shows, and a stack of TV commercials.

Very lucrative, which made up for the relentless pi$$-take from my uni mates.

Way too old, all done in the early to mid 80s.

At the time, there were only 2 TV channels here, with ads only on one. They ran a Sunday night movie which *everybody* watched. One week, the department store was having a huge sale, so I’d done catalog and TV ads for them, plus a furniture and white goods retailer ad where I had a glamorous blond wife and baby as we shopped for stuff. Had also done a short TV commercial for a chain of optometrists advertising their contact lens specials or something. In that one, I had a different girlfriend again.

The Sunday movie was sponsored by those three companies. Every commercial break in the film I was in all three ads.

Oh man did I cop some flak at uni the next day... 😄

I pointed out that I’d spent a total of maybe 1 day doing all those ads, and earned nearly a grand for it. Not bad for a uni bum student in 1985.
