I think I felt a bit like that when I joined. I think the only way for people to get to know you is if you post stuff.womack said:Been a member (reading only) of this board for nearly six years. Posted first time recently when needing some advice. Advice given fitted the bill so thankful for that.
However was always hesitant to post in the general threads as my reading of the board was that if you weren't one of the established many thousands of posts members your opinions and input were not entertained.
I think / guess this would put a lot of new members off, they may try and engage a couple of times only to find themselves in the middle of a "private conversation" amongst the aforementioned so not bother to try and join in again and just disappear until perhaps they need a bit of technical help.
The other problem I see, on here and other boards to be fair, is that there appears to be one "view" and anybody who disagrees with it is not listened to and branded with some ism.
Edit. Yes I do have a holiday home but never had a company pension, hard work paid for it.

There's someone who is renowned for giving duff advice to newcomers that sounds reasonable - and when that happens it descends into the same argument every time. Not very welcoming.0

Just to clarify, I didn't think David and Coopster were the same person although I did at first, just that they were both outliers who got banned. I may be wrong but I think David was banned for his posts on George Floyd. Now he may have used inflammatory language, but without rehearsing the arguments in the wrong thread he spoke for a lot of people who can be critical of his murder by a racist policeman whilst questioning his elevation to sainthood.0

don't really want to go into this too much, but who was doing that? It's just people thought being a criminal doesn't mean you should be executed by the police.shortfall said:Just to clarify, I didn't think David and Coopster were the same person although I did at first, just that they were both outliers who got banned. In my opinion this forum has gone downhill due to the regular posters responses to anyone new posting.
I am an occasional poster on here but have noticed that most threads descend into arguments or childish comments and too much judgement.
In the old days this forum was great for technical and training advice. Nowadays not so much. Basically the regular posters have made it a hostile environment for new posters. Unless that changes the forum will die soon. In fact it’s a bit like the dead parrot sketch. It’s not dead look it moved.....3 -

Most people are normal in real life. Anonymity seems to bring out the Mr Hyde in a lot of Dr Jekylls who are otherwise constrained by their contracts of employment or whatever. Conversely there will be people who say all the right things in threads like "Women's Safety" before hopping over to Pornhub to knock one out. I would have liked to have met Coopster. I remember the Grand Designs episode. Was it the is where the tower had 12 inch thick walls made of concrete harder than diamonds?ugo.santalucia said:I met Coopster in real life many years ago and before he became obnoxious on this forum. We went for a ride in Berkshire, together with the guy who renovated the water tower in Amersham on Grand Design. He did seem a rather normal guy... who would have thought there was a maniac inside...
I can confirm he definitively wasn't a guy who knew much about mechanical stuff, so not the same guy as David37 for sure...0 -
Generally the members who seem to hang around longest have a sense of humour and don’t take themselves too seriously. The serious types lacking humour can be good value but don’t last long.Pinno, מלך אידיוט וחרא מכונאי0

I don't remember much, it was over 10 years ago and I don't remember how we both agreed we had met on that occasion. I think before the all Brexit saga he was more tolerable on the forum. We were in the same club at the time, but I did ride with a different sub group (more hills less cake). Not too tall, not too fat, dark haired... normal guy in many ways...shortfall said:I would have liked to have met Coopster. I remember the Grand Designs episode. I've said it before, but if someone reads something that can be taken one of two ways, read it again but imagining a person saying it with a smile on their face. The written word loses the tone of voice that gives a clue as to the intent. I don't think most people are out to offend.seanoconn said:Generally the members who seem to hang around longest have a sense of humour and don’t take themselves too seriously. I would agree with much of what you say and whilst I enjoy reding pro race it does feel like a very closed shop if you try and chip in.womack said:Been a member (reading only) of this board for nearly six years. If you do stick around cake stop you will find that whilst there is a prevailing view on each topic the dissenters tend to differ from topic to topic

Am I to understand there are too many woke people and not enough diversity?

Just to clarify. I have nothing against centre left middle class white blokes with holiday homes and good pensions, just that it would be nice to see a more diverse body of opinion sometimes. On the holiday homes thing, there was recently a thread dedicated to buying a second home abroad and another about a bloke with a double glazed shed and I thought those two topics were the perfect metaphor for cakestop.surrey_commuter said:

Tour do Algarve (next week) passes right by front door, great cycling area in easy reach of many beaches. Within 100 yards, restaurants, bars, pharmacy, supermarket etc.

If you create a spoiler thread in Pro Race you will be much appreciated. I think my Dauphine thread is by far the most liked post I have made.surrey_commuter said:

I haven't got a driveway or garage, and my front step literally is in the road (not even a pavement).
It's the same for my French house too1
