    (Actually really enjoying the discussion).

My view unless all industries and structures are actually representative of background, it’s hard to argue labour markets are efficient and ergo that they reward people fairly.

In general, my thesis is that luck (or randomness or chance, same thing) defines the parameters and ceiling of success, within reason (we’re talking likelihoods still), and that ability and work ethic determines where within those parameters you do.

To make an extreme illustrative example. The daughter of a crackhead in Burundi is much less likely to be a global 1% earner than the son of a top US lawyer in NYC, regardless of work ethic and ability, which say, is hypothetically the same.

I'm not really sure I know what you are arguing. The highlighted point I made upthread in a very similar way and no one has disputed it.

If I had to make a sweeping judgement, it is that you resent putting forward a mediocre candidate who earns a lot more than you and, in your eyes, is only in that place due to their upbringing/luck.

My fee is a proportion of the comp so I want them to be paid as much as possible.

I’m just explaining market equilibrium is not a thing seen in the wild.
Amazing conflict that. You're paid more to give your client a worse deal.
Surely in any sales transaction there exists the motivation to rip the other party off. I agree the potential conflicts are mostly less blatant though.
that depends upon what the incentive scheme looks like, you could easily base the scheme on repeat business
  • So I have been counting up in a dept of 20 and am struggling to find any locals, in the wider company they are in lowly admin roles and facilities. We have more EU than Northerners who are on a par with "others". 30 years ago there were a sprinkling of Geordies/Scousers and I assumed those areas had improved.

I also realise there are a lot of people who can not be defined by where they come from, like myself who grew up in Norwich between 7-18yrs old and have no other relatives there so was easy to move.

I think the advantage the poshos have is that they get subbed to move to London ie free use of a flat.

The downside is that you run into somebody like me who does not employ you because you live in a flat on Flood Street :D

The inhabitants of Vicenza are jokingly referred to by other Italians as mangiagatti, or "cat eaters". Purportedly, Vicentini turned to cats for sustenance during times of famine, such as during World War II.

It was my boss who warned me off him and he is one of the poshest people I have ever met so it was not class war. His one word argument was "pudding" ie the guy had everything in life provided for him and was only working for pudding so would he care as much as somebody needing to keep a roof over their head and food on the table

In Veneto dialect 'magna gatti', the gn making a ny sound. Part of a rhyme my grandmother used to recite to me about people from the four main towns in Veneto. The Veronese don't come out of it well.

Trying to get clued up on gaming laptop specs having been out of the pc loop for 7+ years, then trying to find the real deals as opposed to shady component/spec downgrades, is an absolute minefield!

However, https://www.youtube.com/@JarrodsTech is great at giving clear and concise info in his reviews/comparisons.

After several days, I'm now trying to work out if one deal is £100 cheaper, simply because it has one 8GB stick of ddr5 and a white backlit keyboard, as opposed to two 8GB sticks of ddr5 and a coloured keyboard... Originally I thought only the more expensive one supposed g-sync according to site, but manufacturers spec suggests both have g-sync and 300+ nits. :D

For a Win10/11 laptop for gaming? I'd want the 16GB of RAM.

So now it's about how easy the upgrade is. If it's simple then pick the one you like best and upgrade if necessary. If it's tricky? Go with the 16GB from the start

Watching Navalny on telly last night. Till then I never understood how they managed to acquire the exact details of how he was poisoned. Jaw dropping stuff.

Still can't work out if he's ridiculously brave, stupid, optimistic or all of the above...

That the decibel scale is logarithmic

As is the Richter Scale. The largest UK earthquake was 6.1 magnitude and the one in Turkey last month was 7.8 which the face value doesn't seem massively different. The largest ever was was 9.5 in Chile back in 1960!

It's the underlying geology though innit.
In Kenya, 1979, I was in an earthquake that measured 5.9 and there was just a lot of vibration and some broken crockery.
The epicentre was in the Indian ocean and the Yemen suffered from a lot of structural damage even though they only measured 4.6 or thereabouts as Yemen is on sand.

And location obviously, Turkey was in a pretty densely populated area. The Chile earthquake 'only' killed 160 odd. Also, places with lots of high rise buildings are going to be worse affected than less developed areas where people are living in traditional housing.

I think I was told it is because the human ear is logarithmic.

That the singular of 'blini' is 'blin', and that the etymology of 'bikini' (both the atoll and the swimwear which takes its name from the atoll) is "The island's English name is derived from the German colonial name Bikini given to the atoll when it was part of German New Guinea. The German name is transliterated from the Marshallese name for the island, Pikinni, ([pʲiɡinnʲi]) "Pik" meaning "plane surface" and "Ni" meaning "coconut tree", or surface of coconuts."

That a certain William Shanks computed pi to 700 decimal places, using a Machin formula. "Only" the first 528 digits were correct, but it was only found out in the 1940's with the advent of mechanical computers.

I'm sure, somewhere in heaven, Ramanujan is laughing about this every single day.

To put things into context, Newton was ashamed of having computed the first 16 digits of pi. To be fair, his series does converge slower than the Machin formula.

    Whatever. 355/113.
