Well this got tactically interesting very quickly.
“Road racing was over and the UCI had banned my riding positions on the track, so it was like ‘Jings, crivvens, help ma Boab, what do I do now? I know, I’ll go away and be depressed for 10 years’.”

Better up the road than off the back - should have sent a couple more.

If he's not there cos he's marking Alaphilippe, then he looks a bit far down that group to me.

Alaphilippe starting to give it the TV Tommy gurning. Just for show for the moment I think.

is it just me or do the crowds at the summits seem a bit thin and low-key? is it because the moto riders clear them out of the road now?
I miss the madness a bit, the baying hordes, the flares etc.

Is Alaphillipe sliding back slightly? Or getting ready for mad descent?

Three weeks ago, if you'd said Yates, Bardet and Quintana would cross Izoard first, I'd have compiled a narrative of a nasty crash for G in week 1, Pinot underperforming as usual and the absence of Froome opening the Tour up.
