Sagan puts Schar onto the tarmac. The CCC man is well peed off.

    Another day, another sprint.
Viviani from Sagan. The rest nowhere.
The Swiss sure have a knack for coming up with deadly dull routes.

Bugger. The photos of that looked good. Though I can't help reading it as the SusTrans pass

Actually, they have manage to make a decent fist of coming up with an alternative. Slightly shorter, with 1000 metres less climbing, but they got a little higher and with stiffer gradients.

It’s a great alternative route. Last year I did Furkapass, Nufenenpass and Gotthardpass (via Tremola), starting and finishing in Andermatt, so very similar. Absolutely brilliant day on the bike.

Yeah that’s a great alternative. Probably the best 100km loop in the country. I hope it can add a spark to this race.

Today's finishing climb on paper doesn't look like one for the squeamish.
Those last 3kms average over 10%

Sure you don't mean in a month's time?
The Gran Fondo San Gottardo is on 21 July, and it is the same loop except that it starts/finishes just outside Airolo, so has San Gottardo first, Nufenen last.
(Costs 60 Swiss Francs, registration possible up to two days beforehand, free goodie bag supposed to include the 2019 event jersey, pasta meals both the evening before and after the event – I'm tempted myself!)

Since we have had live pictures, they have covered 40kms in about 45 minutes. It's been like one massive TTT

    17kms to go.

No, 4th of July. I'm cycling from Bergamo to Geneva with friends that week, and this loop is scheduled for the Thursday. I hadn't thought about the GF San Gottardo, I could be tempted... I suspect a good number from the local club will head south for that.

Bernal taking a flier from the favourites group trying to chase down Tolhoek in the final 1km. Interesting pursuit but suspect it's too big a gap to close.

Awful, awful coverage from the director, but somewhere Bernal basically left everybody for dust and only has Tolhoek ahead to catch, if he can.

400m to go, no indication of the gap but it was 55 seconds with just over 1k to go so will be an incredible ride by Bernal if he makes it!

Bernal 2nd at 16 seconds gets a 6" time bonus.

EDIT he put about 30 seconds into the rest of the favourites in the last km from what I can tell.

Hirt and Pozzovivo were ahead of the rest. Benoot the best of the rest Tour wise, which says a lot about the quality here.
    GC
    1)Bernal
    2)Dennis
    3)Bevin*

    * ride of the day.

Roglic will be so please to see Tolhoek has found his climbing legs. :P

Ineos doing the usual train thing, but it's a bit like watching a death by a thousand cuts.
20 riders left with 5 kms to go

Bernal takes it. 41s over Dennis. TT and MTF to come.
Will he lose it tomorrow and win back on Sun?

Bernal very close to crashing in the TT

Edit: But otherwise an excellent ride - lost only 19 seconds to Dennis. Lampaert wins the stage

Only had his lead cut by half, though, as Dennis only manages 6th, behind Lampaert.

Bernal now leads by 22", but the race heads into his territory for it's finale.

Was it the squeaking of brakes or the squeaking of brailsfords bum?

    Edit: with squeaking sound

The whole stage is live today and they have just started, with the race immediately hitting the toughest climb of the day.
