The bbc report on Froome this morning has added more detail.

He looks like he’s in a very bad way. I wish him and his family well and hope he recovers as quickly as possible.

Given the extent of his injuries it is going to be some time before any sort of recovery timeline can be estimated.
Let's just hope for the best.

Not sure I'm comfortable talking about end of career this close to the accident when so little is public knowledge. I hope he's OK because I heard on the radio this morning that he was in intensive care.

Best wishes to him and his family for a speedy recovery to full health as a husband and a dad first and foremost. It's difficult to say from the reports which can interpreted in many different ways and I'm sure Ineos will make public sensible levels of information about recovery and health in due course.

It sounds like the crash was on the verge of being close to life changing, let alone career ending.

Sounds like it was one of those freak events. I hope it won't be career ending and that he is able to come back and be competitive again, but obviously that will depend on the severity of the injuries, how they heal, and mentally what he wants.

Sounds a very bad accident but also sounds like it could have been a while lot worse hitting a solid object at that speed. Hope he manages to make as full a recovery as possible, he's really grown on me over the last 12 months. One thing I would say is that if it's possible to come back from the injuries then Froome has shown he has the sort of determination to do so.

Indeed. With examples like Weylandts and Casartelli still so fresh in the memory, we can only be thankful that a rider hitting concrete at speed gets to tell the tale.

Some reports were saying that medical assistance was rendered at the roadside for two hours before he was airlifted to hospital. If that's the case, the outcome of this accident could have been much worse. Let's hope he has a good recovery and hopefully he gets another opportunity to target Tour Number 5.

saw a post on Twitter responding to ITV's video of him riding whilst taking off his gilet just before he crashed which said 'Not a very good example to set for cyclists'. I assume they feel that Lewis Hamilton overtaking up the inside of a corner at 100mph is also a poor example to set for drivers...

Team INEOS can confirm that Chris Froome’s surgery was a success following his crash on Wednesday afternoon.

Froome suffered multiple serious injuries after crashing at 55kmph on a recon of stage four of the Criterium du Dauphine, and was taken to Roanne Hospital where he was stabilised and assessed, before being helicoptered to St Etienne Hospital for surgery.

Speaking to TeamINEOS.com, Doctor Richard Usher said: “First things first, the surgery was a success. The operation, which lasted for six hours, went very well.

“Chris woke up this morning and was reviewed by the intensive care consultants and the orthopaedic specialist who operated on him and they’re both very happy with his progress to date.

“Chris will remain in hospital for the next few days for observation, but he is already actively engaging in discussing his rehabilitation options, which is very encouraging.

“As he begins his road to recovery, the team will now only be providing further updates at a stage where it is necessary to do so."

Chris has asked the team to extend his thanks for the overwhelming number of messages of support that he’s received over the last 24 hours. They mean a lot to him.

Chris will release a statement of his own in the coming days.

Was recently loaned a bike with those deep section rims and was warned to be careful in side winds as they can catch the wheel and blow you off course. Wise advice.

After the disappointing giro I was really hoping that he would use the dauphine to hone his fitness, if not win it, and then go on to really light up the tour, giving us some magical moments in the mountains along the way to his 5th win. Gutted for him.
