Did anyone hear the (I think) education secretary on r4 this morning.
She appeared to suggest that she was being hyper cautious because some ceilings indicated as not.in imminent need.of repair had in fact collapsed.0 -

Well, buildings falling on children is not something anyone would want to risk, not even this government.
Apologies if I missed it, but I presume someone has mentioned that Michael Gove cancelled a school's rebuilding programme in 2010.0 -

Unless honesty is not something the party wants.
Poor woman had to defend how Sunak as chancellor took a report recommending thst the rate of school repairs be doubled or quadrupled, and decided to half it.
Absolutely unfair to blame him now though.

That will have been Labour's fault. Anything done in the first decade of a tory government is excused on that basis, didn't you know?veronese68 said:Well, buildings falling on children is not something anyone would want to risk, not even this government.

This is a genuine question, what did any of these people get into politics for?
They have immense levels of influence to shape and execute public policy, even if it is of a political persuasion that I fundamentally disagree with. Yet none of them seem to have any interest in this.
I can only assume that many politicians now (mainly Tory and largely Cabinet Ministers) really are solely concerned with individual gain and ego fulfilment.
I can't quite believe how keen they seem to be to squander any larger influence they have on public life. Whether or not you believe they are doing good or ill, to do nothing at all with it just baffles me.
Or is is the fact they are genuinely so ignorant and talentless that they have no clue what they are actually supposed to be doing (the likes of Dorries, Shapps, Rees-Mogg and many others spring to mind).1 -
I think there is always a tendency to look back on the good old days as being better, but I think the calibre of politicians does seem to have been falling since the Blair era.MidlandsGrimpeur2 said:This is a genuine question, what did any of these people get into politics for?

In the last 20 years the Tories have had 7 leaders and many of them were woeful.
I think it all stems from the electoral system0 -

Autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) was developed in Sweden in the 1920s and introduced to the UK in the late 1950s. In its most common form, it is used in the construction of lightweight thermal blocks.https://ww3.rics.org/uk/en/journals/built-environment-journal/reinforced-autoclaved-aerated-concrete-planks.html
Look, don't blame the Tories, Sweden started it!0 -

She needs to dress up in a costume and carry a sword if she wants that. I actually quite like her too, she does a better job of answering questions than most of them but whilst I can understand her frustration of having to take the flak on this she could always have turned down the offer to join the Cabinet in this laughing stock of a Government and kept her dignity.First.Aspect said:

Looking at the list of known affected schools on the BBC website, there seems to be a dispropotionately high number of them in Essex . . . anyone any ideas why?

Given the labour attack line is already juxtaposing the headline that hundreds of schools are literally crumbling and have had to be shut down next to her saying what a great job she's done, I doubt it's "well played"TheBigBean said:
