Or maybe she does and doesn't care. Though I suppose 'ignorant' might be a slightly less worse attribute than 'downright nasty'.

No, she's thick. She should just figure out how to be more intelligent.

Ending up being nasty by being thick probably isn't a winning combination. Well, maybe it is in the current Tory Party.

Aw, what a lovely thing to say. I think he's still married though, Kay, though you might not still be a journalist.

Rhat's pretty snide from Talbot

"Safe pair of hands"? That alone deserves ridicule, even if you look at it from the perspective of where the Tory Party ended up as result of his trying to hold it together by holding a referendum.

FWIW, Burley should have ignored this post, but instead she proved the Streisand effect. Let's just say that the replies weren't greatly supportive. I guess she misjudged how people felt about her ill-judged praise of Cameron.

I see commenting on live prosecutions and recycling Farage conspiracy theories is now normal for would-be Conservative Party leaders.

My predictions:
She'll not be overly popular with Reform types unless she goes full-on Reform (so that they can overlook her blackness)
She'll be terrible in interviews if journalists scrutinise her robustly (she is totally convinced of her own brilliance, and comes over as condescending and arrogant)

I think she'll be a pretty good leader of the opposition and take the fight to the lefties. PMQs may be quite entertaining. Also being a woman from an ethnic minority means there are less of the tired leftie clichés about Tories for Labour to throw at her.

This is a fair comment, even if part of it is that they've had so many leaders in the past ten years. It'll be interesting to see if Labour's current mix of MPs will lead to change at the top eventually.

Her politcal career has certainly gone better than that of her husband, who stood in the NI constituency of Foyle in 2015

It's extraordinary that she's leader of the opposition and wasn't even an MP at the time of the Brexit referendum
Of all the leaders/Westminster leaders of the the various opposition parties only Gavin Robinson (DUP) and Liz Roberts (PC) were MPs when the referendum was held (both elected in 2015)
Davey I think was a MP but had lost his seat in 2015

Interesting comment on BBC…
Labour have 111 minsters, Tories have 121 MPs, so nearly everyone could get a shadow job under Badenoch with the exception of Cleverly, Hunt and Barclay who have opted for the backbenches.
She has been congratulated by all the party leaders, except Farage & Tice has gone on the attack already. Classy.

It is interesting, maybe more difficult for Labour as they are more likely to be discredited for making a DEI choice, as has been the accusation over the nomination of Kamala Harris.

Given it is almost 50 years since the first woman took over as leader of the Conservative party, it is absolutely disgraceful that Labour have only ever had a middle aged (or older) white male leader. And yet the Tory party membership get labelled racists.......
2 -
It's also interesting that the more right wing elements of the Tory Party would decry the very efforts made by Cameron to change the face of the Tory Party which has succeeded in changing the face of the Tory Party in ways the Labour Party haven't managed

Woke Tories 😁

Badenoch is the fourth female leader of the party and the second from an ethnic minority background. And they've also had a Hindu leader. Tories showing Labour the way in diversity and inclusion...

When Truss took over it was proof that a talentless woman could achieve as much as a talentless man. This is another great moment for equality.
It's difficult to see who will come from the wings to take over when she gets the boot, maybe she will make it four years.

On the subject of ethnic diversity:
"A record number of 90 ethnic minority MPs have been elected to sit in the UK’s most diverse parliament ever, an increase of 24, according to British Future’s analysis of the 2024 general election results.
The historic advance in representation means the new parliament comes closer than ever before to reflecting the diversity of the electorate, with 13.8% of MPs coming from an ethnic minority background. Analysis of census data by Matt Singh of Number Cruncher Politics estimates that 14% of the UK electorate is from an ethnic minority background.
By far the largest number of ethnic minority MPs will sit on the Labour government benches. The 2024 parliament will include 66 Labour MPs from an ethnic minority background, 16% of the new Parliamentary Labour Party. Some 15 ethnic minority Conservatives were elected, alongside 5 Lib Dems and 4 new independent MPs from a minority background.
Women will again outnumber men among ethnic minority MPs, with 50 women from an ethnic minority background winning seats and 40 men."
Make of that what you will.

Considering the unmitigated disasters that were their last two female leaders, it's impressive that they haven't let that put them off.

Does Disraeli not count as being from an ethnic minority?

100% of MPs are women?
0 -
You could only derive that understanding of the numbers if you also believed that 70% of labour MPs were women.
As Labour have 62% of the MPs, it's not quite so impressive to have 70% of the women MPs even though it is above average.

1922 changed their rules too.
Previously 15% triggered an no confidence vote. Increased to 1/3+1
