  • The way I measure 1 minute power output is as follows...

I sit on a wattbike and do some warm up, I select the one minute program... I pedal like a lunatic and try to hold on for one minute... I read the display which says that over one minute I kept nearly (and I stress nearly) 400 Watt...

What am I doing wrong, 'cause clearly I should be over 500

From what I can see, these are all manipulated numbers, if you can't see that, then we are talking a different language

    Define manipulated

So because you can't hold 500w the rest of us shouldn't be able to?

The table says I should... so clearly I am doing something wrong (on top of being wrong on the all argument)... can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

So because I didn't do any specific one minute tests that my numbers are manipulated?

But surely, that just means that if I did do a specific effort the number could be higher.

yes, I would expect that too...
unless your current numbers are born out of an algorithm, which is my suspicion.

Only one way to find out... and I should add I'd be honestly in awe if you can do one full minute at 600 Watt

haha, WKO4 is not algorithm :D These are real numbers.

I don't post to Strava regularly anymore, but I've found a minute at 600+ watts and uploaded it, looks like this was a specific minute effort - look at laps.

  • But the file on Strava doesn't even have the power meter... when they do there is a little sign, like a thunderbolt to indicate that they are real data...

Are we talking estimates from Strava here?

The ride was with a power meter - look it says Weighted Average Power, you only get that if you had a power meter.

The little symbol only appears on the leaderboard and this was not my KOM up there, that is from a different ride.

Here's the effort from the leaderboard of my results with the little lightning bolt symbol:

  • Interesting...

you climb about the same pace as I do (from other rides).... but I can't get anywhere near those numbers...

Oh well, a minute is not my thing clearly :-)

Comparing my stats properly on Strava, I can see I am about 20-30 watts down across the board, from where I was last August\September - so pretty pleased with that all things told.

Have never carried out a specific all out 1 minute effort, but pretty sure that is not where my talents lie either.

Don't be so quick to judge my climbing pace, there are so many hills around here that I might just take them easy most of the time.

I have about 400 KOMs around Exmoor.

Yes, but typically there are 34 other riders on the board... which seems a bit odd, knowing how popular Exmoor is... there are way more than 34 riders just in Minehead CC, I even know one of them!

Anyway, wildly off topic here, so I rest my case... you can do one minute at 600 W and I can't, that's the bottom line

... AND I have got only one KOM... and to be honest I think it is a mistake...

Apparently not... and I was wrong all the way. So best to leave this thread before I get slayed...

  • Just to pip in a note, for me, one minute power is something that I can train and is quite responsive, but doesn't necessarily fall in-line with the rest of my fitness. Given its so high-end and demands strength as well as endurance, it doesn't really have all that much correlation with FTP.

For these sorts of dedicated short efforts, FTP can often define your upper-bound potential (i.e. your energy delivery systems), however you still need to go out and do them to make the appropriate neuromuscular adaptions in order to improve. I can find that after a few weeks of not doing any sprint/short efforts, i'm back at around 550w for the minute, but can bring it back up to 600 after a session or two (One recent stab: https://www.strava.com/activities/20468 ... sis/44/103).

Though to be honest, a dedicated one-minute max effort is one of the most disgustingly hard intervals, despite how short it is. Getting your max out is horrendously hard, because unlike the longer efforts, you can't really make up for it later as the average plummets quickly. Whereas it's quite common on long efforts e.g. 10-20 minutes to negative split, or give it a little nudge in the last 2-3 minutes when you know you have more left.

Also on the topic of 4000m pursuit, there is a BIG difference between doing 1x600w pull, vs 600w for 1 minute and 450w for another 3 minutes.

I'm a stats nerd too. Discovering cycling with a power meter and all the numbers that go with it was like a wet dream for me :lol

45yrs, 74kg, 175cm, 3rd cat - do crits, flat road races and TTs

    5s - 1283
    12s - 1090
    30s - 861
    1 min - 612
    5 mins - 427
    20 mins - 331
    1 hour - 316

    Goals

Get second cat (not much chance of that at 45 with no teammates and no racecraft, but worth a shot)
    Sub 21 minute 10
    Sub 55 minute 25

Edit - sobering to think my 5 minute power is less than Wiggins managed for an hour...

I dont pick up KOM's. I dont always ride with a power meter either.

I cant do 600W for minute, it hurts too much. I did manage 537W for 1 minute last year that hurt enough. However given my mass that does not translate to going that fast up hill. On my garmin I can put a scaling factor in. I would not be surprised if there is some garmin doping around.

  • Well, want to put mine too. I'm pretty surprised about how high the level of the forum seems to be, everyone seems to be very strong.

    66-68 kg, 31yr old, 178cm

    Bests from 2018:
    5s - 1084w (15.9 W/Kg) random effort
    1m - 534w (8.0 W/Kg) random effort
    5m - 399w (5.9 W/Kg) during test
    15m - 340w (5.1 W/KG) during test
    20m - 320w (4.8 W/Kg) random during training
    CP - c. 305w (4.6 W/Kg) during peak, from Golden Cheetah
    55m - 315w ( 4.6 W/Kg), a bit heavier when I did it compared to peak form CP...

Goal is to reach and stay at 5 W/KG FTP this year. Been cycling for 4 years now, last 2 years with some method and consistency. Still pretty much behind my teammates in races and granfondos. Will try to see how are things in this year's Haute Route in August. Long way to go, the top guys in the granfondos are currently way out of my league.
