You can buy anything. Just Google for Garmin brackets. We don't know which one you have.

I am not 'conflating' anything. You have said you live in a building but that you do not have insurance and consider it a non-starter.

Yes you suggested I said that about bike insurance - which I did not

So you conflated from my saying home insurance is a non-starter.... [as people suggest I get it to add bike insurance onto it - hmm]

So your post actual shows that you did make that statement up...

    Not to worry

I was trying to offer advice, as were most of the people who have posted in this thread. It was not my intention to upset you, but as you say, not to worry.

    God this is painful.

Why the hell wouldn't you just get home insurance that covers the bikes (and all your other things)? It'll probably cost about the same as a standalone bike policy, as you're buying quite a cheap bike (relatively) and thus won't need specifying with many providers. Your desire to ride to places is totally at odds with wanting to carry huge bulky locks with you.

I have two decent locks at work for when I commute, but they stay there. The bikes are all insured (on my home insurance), if one gets nicked then it's a pain, but meh, life goes on. That's what insurance is for.

Please tell me you've not actually bought an Edge 1030!?

Inkj, you're getting some reallly good advice here, I'd recommend reading what the good experienced people on here have taken their time to tell you.
But if I was you I'd pedal to Brighton, go to the cinema, enjoy the film knowing that your three bike locks are doing their thing. Then you can enjoy the train journey home without having to fight to get your recently stolen bike onboard! And then you'll be on here moaning about having to save up for a new bike as you didn't bother getting insured!

Again I never said I didn't want to get bike insurance

    Hmm

And no - home insurance would not be about the same as bike insurance

Bike insurance would be about £4 - £5 a month

It does seem like some of you are on commission for home inssurance policies.

I get it's the internet and people like to try and change what you have said and then make silly statements. Clearly I have said I have no intention of getting home insurance. I NEVER said I wouldn't get bike insurance.

Then just do that. Get one lock as a deterrent to stop the opportunist and get on with your life.

Really? My household insurance costs about £6 odd a month, covers my bikes (I have quite a few, mainly elderly cheap things, but also a couple of decent ones). SI is about £75,000. I doubt I'd even bother claiming on most.

But what a household policy also gets you is personal liability, which includes whilst riding a non motorised vehicle. So if I burn down my (rental) house, poke someone's eye out with my umbrella, or mow them down with a bike, I'm covered.

That's worth the cost IMHO. And generally a lease requirement for anyone renting.

Apart from in your first post in this thread where you wrote "I don't really want to get insurance"!!!

FFS. All this and you haven't even got a bike yet. Buy your locks, start saving for when the bike gets knicked and you have to buy a new one and let's all move on.

What's all this talk of £5 for house insurance ? Mines almost £40 a month but it does include umpteen bikes.

Last time i looked at it it was by far the cheapest way to do things. Specific bike only insurance was almost as much as the house cover.

From what I can gather he's in two minds, if not more, about bike only cover but doesn't want home contents cover. Presumably this means he'd rather pay the same amount to only cover his theoretical bike than to also insure all his worldly goods in the case of flood or fire.
I don't think any advice can compete with that kind of logic. He needs to stop overthinking, buy a bike and a lock and get out there.

Just out of interest I googled a bike insurance comparison website. Looks to be some really good deals on there - but they must be to insure a kids bike or something.

My quote came to almost as much as the house insurance...

(and i didnt include all the bikes !)

    Well….

I did look at home insurance just now… for in case I am going crazy

The cheapest through Compare the Market worked at over £100 a month and £350 excess… Bit silly for a £530 [or £468] bike. I put £250 excess in [and that was the best/lowest quote] – if I put £0 excess in the cost per month will shoot up

Bike Specialist cover seems to be about £4.44 [for £530 bike] with £25 excess <through BC affiliate>

Or [for £530 bike] £5.94 with no excess <through UK Cycling affiliate but unlike with the BC one I get no discount with them>… I’m trying to call them at the moment as this policy suggests I get £500 cycle accessories included… but that must be included in the £530… otherwise this one is a no brainer…. It’s £4.75 with excess. Again I need to speak to them to see how much the excess is.

£100 p/m? Do you live in a palace?

I paid £450 for my Cube Hyde from eBay and rode it for a 6 months before it got nicked. Got my ref. no. from the fuzz, called my insurance, paid £100 excess and was then allowed to buy a bike for £900, which is what the original RRP was. I even called them to say I bought the bike used but they reminded me my policy was "new for old".

My insurance is through Lloyds and I'm paying £19 a month, but I've had much lower quotes from MMS and uSwitch recently. So yeah, a bit more than bike specific insurance, but then it also covers absolutely everything else I own, weather it's in the flat or when I'm out and about... plus all the other additional benefits of home contents insurance.

Anyway, I said I was done with this and I am now.

People of Brighton, keep an eye out for this outside the local Cineworld...

I've just checked our Home buildings and contents insurance(including bikes as named items) and it's £35 a month.Where you get £100pm for contents only seems strange.
Question. How would you replace everything in your flat if it burned down if you don't have insurance? Not having home insurance is rather stupid.Sit and work it out.Clothes, tech stuff, carpets, furniture, etc. Then there's all the stuff people tend to forget.Records,Tapes,CDs,DVDs,Books,clothes.Contents alone would cost me probably in excess of £25k and that's being conservative.
How can you not have home insurance.
Reading your other threads/posts is making my Troll-ometer twitch.

£17 a month, no need to name bikes, up to £15k of bike cover anywhere on the planet. Works for me.

Also can't comprehend £100 a month as the minimum unless the OP owns lots of diamond jewellery and lives in the roughest part of Tower Hamlets!

Mine is £6 or £7 a month. £75k contents, all risks on contents. Bikes covered in my shed. I don't worry about them when being used. I use cheapies for commuting etc, and my proper bikes are either in my car or under my arse. Last bike I had stolen was in the 1970's when I was at school.

OP if you are struggling with what to do, insurance, locks etc how about this option.
I believe you want to secure the bike at Brighton when you go to the cinema mainly so that's probably 1 or 2 times a week at most?.
I would go on Social media, FB and find a group from Brighton. Ive found there are always groups like "Things for Sale in *****", there's 1 for my local town.
Join the site then put an add on the site asking for fellow cycling ladies if they would be happy to house your bike while you go to the cinema for fear of it being stolen etc. In sure someone would contact you with a helping hand.
Other option is join one of Brightons cycling clubs and befriend someone there, you could end up with a few more friends and socially way better off in life..
Or do a reccee of the cinema and knock on a few doors of houses close by, look for lace curtains or obvious OAP dwellings they are easy to spot. You may find someone willing to help...

I'm sure that would easily be do-able in Derbyshire where I live but not sure how you folk down South are....

Total cost a month, 15 minutes chatting with the occupant....

I think a lot of this is theoretical as the OP hasn't done any cycling for years and the cycling to the cinema (3 or 4 hours away) is a bit of a dream. I'd never do it and I'm used to riding for that amount of time.

Hey thanks for the suggestions will respond later as rushing....

But I'm wheels up on 20th Aug [South Downs Link then onto Brighton]

I get my bike next Wednesday

And I think I have found the best insurance

More later as I have a 'do' tonight

Officially it starts at St Marthas, so add in the bit from Guildford, and then from Shoreham to Brighton and it's probably closer to 50 miles.

A long way for a first ride. The butt is going to be in serious pain.

Seems a bit weird, train to Guildford, ride to Brighton, watch a movie and train home. So many cinemas is London. Surely if you're going to the Brighton, go to the sea, or other stuff that London doesn't have.
