Just watched the highlights. Dumoulin looked very impressive. Yates went all out in the final and Dumoulin seemed able to react to it really well. Think Yates expected to take more time with that attack. It's going to be fascinating to the end of the race.

    Phwoar.

Loving the route organisers this week.

240km after a rest day straight up a second cat and then 150km with that punchy finish?

    Nom nom nom.

Wonder if Yates should have waited longer.

I also hypothesize that had that climb been after 240km and not 150km Dumoulin wouldn’t have performed as well...

Also, moto was too close to Yates. Fair play he didn’t chase it all the way but still.

    you raise an interesting notion.

It was good to see the wearer of the GC jersey attack, race against the runner-up and actually win stages.

In my opinion, previous tours have had a dull GC competition (with the exception of last years Giro when it went down to the last stage TT) on previous tours the GC contenders just sat on each other's wheel and win few (if any) stages.

That’s why I love the Giro and hate what SKY have done to the TDF

Yates is doing it brilliantly, reminds me of the attacking spirit of Hinault et al.

    Fabulous stuff.

I'm watching the highlights of today's stage on Eurosport Player now. Is there any reason why De Marchi had different profile wheels? Looks like he has a 50 rim on the back and a shallow profile wheel on the front?

Possibly windy or maybe he had a puncture and got a spare that didn't match.

Or maybe he chose to ride like that After all some of the most expensive wheelsets available are similar (See the ENVE website)

Yeah some people dig the whole "shallow front, deep back" combo. I don't see the appeal personally

Tom might have looked strong on the TV but go and check today’s MS Backstage Pass. He looks totally broken when Yates tries to shake his hand.

Lovely measured ride by Geniez showing good control of power. Still think he's got another level. Looking better at A2

Good metaphor for the GC this - https://instagram.com/p/Bi2oceNDE7L/

Yates out in front and smiling but the shadowy figure of a hulking Tom in the background biding his time
We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

Yeah because wind affects handling of a deep front a lot more than deep rear.

If TD was comfortable, why hadn't he fully closed down Yates? I can't see TD going at anything other than 100% to close Yates down, and we don't know if Yates had any more to give.

More TD said they were the best sensations he’s had all race.

Hinault won races by dominating time trials and having the strongest team. 20 of his 28 stage wins at the Tour were time trials. And half his six Giro stage wins.
