I had two targets this year:

    - Ride the Flanders sportive - Done
    - Ride the Cingles de Ventoux. That's coming up fast and given that I'm currently not riding due to a crocked back I'm a bit concerned about this one right now

Rode the Cingles successfully on Saturday. Man, that is a beast of a ride but great to tick the box.

It was my commuting buddy Nick's 50th birthday and 15 of us spent a great long weekend in a farmhouse just outside Bedoin. About ten of us completed the Cingles with others riding various combinations depending on how they felt.

Being in a big group and all wearing bespoke team kit definitely helped.
The Cingles looks like a massive ride (I've been following the Cingles thread in the Tour&Expidition forum). Well done on getting the recovery needed to complete it. It sounds like a great weekend was had by all.

Here's my video of the Cingles. it's a bit difficult to compress nine hours of riding, 142km distance and 4,500 metres vertical into six minutes but hopefully it gives you a taster

Good video. Love the kit. I'd love to try it, while I've still got the energy and the legs.

    Mine are:

Get out on bike (done some)
Get the soot bike back up and running
Ride a 100km Audax in October.

Let's see how the latter two fair...
    RIP commute...
Sometimes seen bimbling around on a purple Fratello Disc or black and red Aprire Vincenza.

So the Cat2 is done! Got a Btwin Triban 540 for my workations and, after going up a few Cat3's (not many around Edinburgh, mind you) I went up Jaizkibel, which was ranked as Cat 2 in the 1992 TdF.

Exploring routes around, I've found another interesting climb that's the opposite of traditional British climbs: 11.8 km at a very very steady 6%. Could be a a Cat 1 depending on who you ask but, since it has no ramp above 8%, it'll probably be classed as just a grind here, even if climbing it will take me the better part of 1h.

    <snip>Strava links to PB's </snip>

    That should keep me busy.;)

Props, that's some damn good going , and thanks for all the links, gives me a few segments to hit out and ride by the end of the year, even if not all in one go!

Just over 1/2 way with my mileage targets for the year - not so good considering we're over 1/2 way though the calendar year - but we're only 6 months into my cycling year and I have had the last 2 weeks off - still managing to put in >60 miles with Little Slowbike on the back - so that contributed a bit.

~160 miles down on to-date target - that's easy to gain - if I get the time to ride!

I've got one, and only 1.
I've failed the last 3 years to make dents on it. Gotta change.

    1) Loose 20 kg, or at least reduce waist by 4 inches.

Half way through the year. Not going away :(
Family decision to attempt to go vegan in Jan has been a massive contributor to this, can't get the right food in so eat rubbish instead, meaning that crisps have returned the menu as snacks, as boiled eggs or pre-cooked chicken strips aren't on the menu, and I can only eat so many nuts ( unless it's salted peanuts...)
Currently over 3200 KM of the 5500km yearly target complete though, so I'm on target for that, which is good, just need to up the HR Zone I do it in.

Aiming to do 10,000 km. that may prove to be a bit high but I’ll finish 2017 on 7000km and I missed the first 2.5 months so it should be achievable

Sub 18 min lap of RP

    Enjoy Tour of Flanders

    Flanders was great.

Won’t get to 10k this year, losing the first 2.5 months of the year with injury has killed that so I have dialled back the goal to 9k which is doable.

Have only done a couple of laps of RP this year, both hampered by stupid amounts of traffic. When I can be bothered I’ll get in there early and give it a blast.

Still looking to be a bit short of 10,000 km but not by much.

Did a lap of RP in 18.33 at the end of a sunday morning ride out to the hills, my lap included me having to virtually stop for a couple of horses crossing the road !!! Will aim for an early lap with fresh legs one weekend just to see what I can do.

After pneumonia earlier this year absolutely wiping me out, I was happy just to get back on the bike in March. A crazy busy year meant I only managed to rack up 700 miles before my trips to the Alps, so I was a bit apprehensive about my fitness.

As it turned out I was better than I thought, I had no issues climbing for hours at a time and ticked off Semnoz, Forclaz, l’arpettaz, Leschaux, Alpe d’Huez, Croix de Fer, Sarenne, Sabot, Collet, La Berarde, Maronne, and Auris and OZ ski stations. To top it off I was over 6 minutes faster up the Galibier (we regrouped at the top of Telegraphe) than my group of friends, despite them riding 4 times the distance I have this year. I left them at the bottom and never looked back, and I was comfortable the whole way up.

Not only that, but I got to see the guy who very kindly gave us a lift in his van to the Telegraphe fulfil his own dream of climbing Galibier. He’s 66 years old and was supposed to come to the Alps in his 50’s, but heart problems and a series of operations and procedures meant he had to put it on the back burner. To see him coming up that last section to the summit will be an inspiration to me for the rest of my life. He was struggling with groin trouble after the Telegraphe, but took a couple of painkillers and carried on for the 18k of Galibier. He wasn’t even particularly slow either, doing it in around 1hr 45. What a guy.

So as bad as it started out, this year has turned into my best ever year of cycling by a long way.

Aiming for the ones I missed this year:
Ride 40 and 50 miles more often. (Say, once a month)
Get in at least one 100ml ride. I may have to sign up to an event to acheive this.
    Adding: Run a marathon
Beat my 20 yr old son's PB at Park Run (I'll be 50)☺
Consolidate: Maintain this years weight loss - staying in 70 to 71kg zone
Keep recording daily activities however small. (I'm satisfied with five or less non active days a month, though)
    2nd Quarter update

Still in the metric century club and have done the Dragon, my first "proper" imperial century and first over 200km. Very pleased with that.
Hopefully I can keep motivated to keep up with the MCC challenge now that my big ride is done.

Running a marathon. I'm doubtful about this as I've been cycle focussed for the last 6 weeks. I'm not going to beat myself up if it doesn't happen.

Beaten my Parkrun PB and my son's in May. He's just broken his arm so won't be beating me any time soon. I'm trying not to be too cheerful about that.

Weight is staying down. My belly fat hasn't gone, so I need to think about how to deal with that rather than the BMI stat.

Activity: once I put my Dragon Ride in Strava I had exceeded in 2018 the no. of hours activity recorded in 2017. All good! Partly down to more consistent recording, partly down to more and longer rides. Ive done a 100km ride and a half marathon every month up to May.

Feeling quite good at this stage.

    So third quarter done.

After doing well to June, I had to abandon a last chance attemptt at staying in the Metric Century Club at the end of July (due to light and back up light both running out on a night ride). Ah well, maybe next year.

Due to starting a new job with a new shift patern at the start of August, I didn't get much long riding done in Aug-Sept, but I have been commutting 60-90 miles a week. I haven't set a mileage target for the year, but it looks like I'll double my previous highest annual mileage this year (previous best was just over a thousand miles so no records being broken).

I need to get in the habit of going out on my days off, as only doing the commute is getting very boring.

Weight is creeping up again and my waist line is not getting thinner. Must try harder, but working shifts plays havoc with my eating pattern.

Running is stuck at half marathon distance. Going further and building up to a marathon would be nice, but I can't see it happening in the next twelve months.

I'm now needing to think of a "big event" to get me motivated for next year. I really enjoyed the Dragon Ride, even though it terrified me and I finished in the dark at midsummer! Maybe it's time to try an audax or something like the Cingles (my wife wouldn't object to a week in Provence if the price was right).

Fleet, Hampshire, close to Surrey and Berkshire borders. However I have a daughter in Birmingham Uni and family in South Wales, so can combine cycling tourism with family duties.

This also caught my eye: http://cycleclassics.co.uk/bournville-classic/
Not for this October, but maybe next summer. Any comments on the route or Cycle Classics organisation are welcome

I will have a few (very few) places for sale for my BRUM 200 sometime in December... pretty much sold out otherwise. That's July 6th

You could do the Kidderminster Killer 200 from Belbroughton (SW Brum) on July 20th... it's a very hard but rewarding ride through Shropshire, it even goes up "The Burway" one of the 9/10 in Warren's book of climbs.

  • Actually win a road race, not won anything on the road since 2015 - Fail. Two 3rd places is the best I managed. My best points scoring year though, despite having raced the least amount of races.
Get 100+ Points in a season - Fail. Managed 56 or so.
Win an open TT - Completed, albeit a road bike. Possibly could have won an early season one too but two chain drops meant 2nd place.
Win one of the RP TT's - Fail. Got out of shape mid year and managed to screw up my position enough that 3rd was the best I could manage.
Take the RP ACW KOM - Also fail. On paper thought I could have manged this given the right day/watts/position but never quite got there. Was on target for a 14.10 or so but again chain drop. Then the KOM was lost to a bunch of rowers on a big chainy. Suspect that'll drop a fair amount further given half the park is going to be a hell of a lot smoother.

well - final 2 months of 2018 - the season all but over ... (although commuters don't tend to season their rides).

For me - less than 400 miles to hit overall target that I wasn't targeting too hard - but now it's on the horizon and doable (sub 50 miles a week for the rest of the year) - then it's a target I intend to reach.
  • Had a attempt on one of my targets yesterday, we've been on holiday in Tenerife and thus MT Tiede and thus a 3rd crack at it. it's a long old climb though not steep up to the crater edge, 22miles/35km

Was starting from slightly different position this time, in that I was staying in El Medano rather than Las Americas though the average grade and distance where nr identical slightly shorter from Las Americas, I had perviously hired a 105 equipped road bike from Bike Point, and after that, my really rather heavy cheap CX bike i'd had. Both times i'd suffered and really felt it on the upper steeper slopes once past the 15 mile mark.

I'd set a target of 4:20 (Strava) which was my best time so far (on the Bike Point bike) but had hoped for a sub 4hr, which I just about sneaked in, was rather close, 3:52 helped i'm sure by leaving pre dawn, to keep cool, and making sure I fed myself like clockwork. that and the fact I do a lot more miles than I used to!

Well done, Roger! Going up a 6% average 35km climb is pretty impressive in my books.

BTW, how high can you go by road? The Strava segment gives about 2200m climb, but the actual mountain is almost 4000m high.

The Crater edge appears to the highest point, the mountain is only accessible by cable car/walking though is controlled, last time I rode into the Crater, but this time I didn’t want to leave my wife that long, and equally not huge amount of interest. I have been up a few times, and have been exploring some of the closer ones or areas nr by on the bike, it’s a gravel bike so I have been able to do both, with it.

These weren't my targets for the year, but the things I'm happy with:

    1. My HR is about 10bpm down for any given power output compared to last November
    2. My exercise structure is getting better, such that I'm not running myself into the ground on a regular basis
    3. I'm running regularly
    4. I can do the Monday morning commute after going out with the Club fast group on a Sunday.
    5. Don't get dropped by the fast group
    6. Looking to end the year below 70kg
    Mud - Genesis Vapour CCX
    Race - Fuji Norcom Straight
    Sun - Cervelo R3
Winter / Commute - Dolan ADX
