Aiming for the ones I missed this year:
Ride 40 and 50 miles more often. (Say, once a month)
Get in at least one 100ml ride. I may have to sign up to an event to acheive this.
    Adding: Run a marathon
Beat my 20 yr old son's PB at Park Run (I'll be 50)☺
Consolidate: Maintain this years weight loss - staying in 70 to 71kg zone
Keep recording daily activities however small. (I'm satisfied with five or less non active days a month, though)

No such thing as junk miles. I do race but cycling is my transport to. So what may seem like junk miles is me getting to work and back.

My main target is to join the 400 club in the mersey roads 24hr TT. Also to do 250 miles in a 12hr tt. All this on a road bike too. Other target is to get entry in for Paris brest Paris in 2019 and do a 1000km next summer. Also I need to win a circuit race and do some mtb racing too.

Heart of England 300 in April, London-Wales-London 400 in early May and Bryan Chapman memorial 600 km in late May... add a random 200 and that should be my Super Randonneur award. I have also signed up for the Snowdon and Lakes 300 in June, which I very much look forward to. That should be enough for the first half of 2018. In the second half I would like to do some fast touring in July or August, but I haven't planned anything yet

I love aribitrary targets - they’re right up there with ‘lists’ 8)

    So for this year:

    1 - sub 18 minute RP lap
    2 - sub 55 minute 3 lap challenge
    3 - complete L’Etape without dying
    4 - complete the Dales in <07.30
5 - ride more with the kids
    6 - hit and hold 80kg
  • Return to The Mendips cat3s I did in November 2017, but this time on the Cube and hopefully climb "Draycott Steep" rather than only having time to descend that bonkers 1.2 miles with 725 feet of climbing.

Climb at least one cat2/1/HC hill, at the moment I fancy Bwlch y Groes.

Go sub 8mins for Harvesting Lane, means improving by ~15secs.

Go sub 14mins for Bell Hill To The Top, means improving by ~30secs.

Go sub 9mins for Old Winchester Hill To The Top, means improving by ~40secs.

Go sub 58mins for River To Hilltop + Bell Hill To The Top combo, means improving by ~3mins.

Make good use of the Elite Direto and it's power meter for improving my fitness and power.

    That should keep me busy.;)

Achieved all of mine for 2017 so I'd like to do the same - 5k miles with a hihger mix of weekend rides.

One thing I want to do (and I've never done) is ride with a club as I think this would get me out of bed on a Sunday if I had committed to someone else. Does anyone know the Kingston Phoenix lot? Are they human?
    2015 Cervelo S3
    2016 Santa Cruz 5010
    2016 Genesis Croix de Fer
  • 1) 17:30 lap of Richmond Park
    2) 10st 7lbs at some point

Nothing planned this year - just keep doing some cycling really.

I'd like to finish in the top 10% in age group at both the London and Windsor triathlons over Olympic distance.
    Mud - Genesis Vapour CCX
    Race - Fuji Norcom Straight
    Sun - Cervelo R3
Winter / Commute - Dolan ADX

What have you tried so far? I have an unhealthy relationship with food, and in middle age my weight was creeping up year on year. Tried and failed repeatedly to shift any of it.

    The 5:2 diet saved me

Primarily in 2017 it was a hope that an additional 2000km and some general will power would help out fight my see-food diet.
Turns out while the former helped a lot, the latter didn't work at all. Really looking at planning things this year, but I'm not sure how that will work in a time short now generally vegan house with a food monster (me) on the loose.

In summer 2016, when I was ~95Kg, I made a mental list of all the "snacks" I was having before/after main meals. My plan was to limit myself to a maximum of half that number of snacks per day and if my stomach was still craving more food because it had got used to large volumes coming in, I filled my stomach up by drinking more water.

The first few weeks weren't easy, but soon my stomach started to shrink a little and not expect so much coming in. Back then I was only cycling ~27 miles per week, but by January 2017 I had dropped to ~83Kg.

It actually became harder to lose further weight once I started my fitness cycling quest in January 2017, especially once I started doing 2+ hour rides, I learned the hard way that I needed to take fuel with me to pick at to stop me emptying the fridge and cupboards on my return.

I'm now ~76Kg, albeit I've had a dodgy stomach since last Friday night, which has lowered my appetite and I've had to drink lots of extra fluid to maintain ~59.5%+ water according to our new digital scales... While I've had to call in sick again today, the most frustrating thing is that I've not ridden outdoors or on my new Direto since last Thursday and I'm shattered from successive nights of interrupted sleep!

Your ride and one by someone I know, also done in August, opened up my eyes to Bwlch y Groes. As a youngster, we lived in Dolgellau for a few years and I haven't been that way for best part of ~25 years now, great excuse to see the area again and get a cat climb fix. :)

It's a nice little loop, although you have to retrace your step twice. There are two cafes at Lake Vyrnwy, which is a stunning location.
The Dinas side of BYG is very steep and relentless, so you will need some kind of small gear... I did it with a 36 x 32, the other two sides are much more gentle. Take your time descending BYG on the Dinas side as well. I stopped twice to take photos and cool the brakes

My only target is to continue enjoying my riding. I'm not 'training' for anything, so there's no point in worrying about stuff.

One of my colleagues this morning was complaining about his commutes being 'junk miles'. He does the odd sportive, and weekend rides, but isn't training for anything in particular. In fact, he seems to train just for training's sake, and seems to miss the whole point of cycling just for enjoyment.
I use IPbike to record my rides and for ride "type" I have commute, training, race, fun. I've noticed that they all transfer to Strava except the "fun" option which says it all really I think.

My target would just be to go out more for fun. I don't really enjoy cycling to work that much any more, but most of the time it's still better than the alternatives.

    OK, targets for 2018?

    1. Get healthy and fit and stay that way.
    2. Avoid crashes / injuries.
    3. Do a proper season of track racing and win some stuff along the way.
    4. Do more TTs, get PBs for 10 and 25.
    5. Do some proper road races - circuit races don't really suit me.
    6. Get a lot miles in than last year (see 1 and 2 above).
    7. Do some longer rides with the kids - my son has got the bug, need to gert him riding further and need to get my daughter riding too.

    Right then....not many for me.
    1. 2500 miles for the year and enjoy them.
    2. Ride 100 if I get in.
    3. London to Brighton, never done, always wanted to etc.
    4. Try to keep my cycling expenditure to slightly less than the GDP of a small country.
    5. Do abit of cycle related volunteer work.

    .

I've worked out, ALL IN (consumables and replacement of worn out/broken components, clothing, safety stuff, electronics etc), I spend about 10p per Km or 16p a mile, if you prefer...that works out roughly 1300 quid per year.

Sounds like you are more in the 1 pound a mile bracket... :D

    Targets this year
1/ No more than 8 days by car to work (same number as last year), some times its not avoidable
2/ That should mean (work place commitments out of my control|) circa 1200-1300 miles commuting
3/ Stay in 32" waist jeans
4/ More MTBing this year than last (not enough at all).
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • 1. Lose tiny bit of Christmas beer gut by wedding in early Feb
    2. Swap awful flat handlebars on commuter for drops
    3. Consistently wake up early enough to ensure I don't have to drive part of the way to work to make it on time
    4. Use my lovely, and thoroughly underused GT mountain bike more. Also, generally improve my currently rubbish mountain bike skills.
    5. Join a club, possibly enter some events. The old man reckons I have some genuine pace, curious to see how I match up against more than just commuters as I'm approaching cycling peak years.

I have signed up for the Dragon Ride Gran Fondo in June, it features Bwlych as the first climb, so that will be nice. :?
Definite motivation to get out and ride.

Going well with the longer rides. Three months, three metric centuries. Starting to dream about the Metric Century Club's Lantern Rouge.
Signed up to the Dragon Gran Fondo - 130+ miles, so that will tick off the 100 mile ride. I will need to get one in before the event, though.
If all goes well with the Dragon Ride then I'll target the Pilgrim's way marathon in September. Working on my half marathon time via Strava's 1:59 challenge. but prep for the Dragon is my real priority for the next ten weeks.
Nowhere near my son's PB this year, but I have beaten in him in both Parkruns we ran together. Once the weather improves I will be back on top!
Weight has briefly been over 71kg, but most of the year in 69-71kg zone. So I'm happy with that.
Activity: Last year I recorded 37 hrs activity in Strava in the first quarter, this year it's 102 hrs. I'm recording stuff that I didn't last year, like walks into town (3 miles round trip), but the decision to record something every day means I am doing more of that type of thing when I don't have time for a big ride or energy for a big run.

Even with 3 months to go, I hit all my unmabitious targets for this year. For 2018, my second full year as a mamil, my targets would be:
    • Keep commuting by bike through the winter... tick!
    • ...without being hit by rouge taxis or have an accident... tick!
    • and break the 70 kg barrier (currently at 73.0) not happening.
    • Ride an imperial century (longest ride so far is a mere 70 miles)
    • Climb at least a Cat 2 col, or a Cat 1 for extra props.I have a plan..
    • Beat my total time in the Lepra ride.tick!!
On top of that, my garmin has a goal of 5000 km for next year. I don't know, it seems less than 25% likely. Looking at the list, I can see 4/6 being achieved. I doubt I'll do 100 miles next year, and both the 70 kg and Cat2 targets are about 50/50.

OK, so we're technically past the winter, although the beasts from the east haven't noticed. Nevertheless, been commuting past the winter, with very few days off the bike (ice on the road + flu in January, beast from the east #1, plus a big day at the office). I have not fallen, or crashed at all since September, despite the best intentions of some people, and having drifted with both wheels on freshly fallen hail.

My weight's down a bit, but fluctuating between 72.0 and 72.5 kg. IF I start riding longer, for joy+training, I'll hit the weight target.

The others look as likely as in december, except I'm pretty sure I won't hit the Garmin distance...unless I get a bike/travel with mine during my long work-related trip to Spain (Basque Country, in case you wonder).

    2) 10st 7lbs at some point

Nothing planned this year - just keep doing some cycling really.

    1) 18:47 last week without giving it a proper effort. It's possible.

    Ok - first Qtr update

Had to look back at what I aimed for ... nothing specific :)
January was a writeoff - didn't get on the bike once due to flu.

Still managed ~400 miles in 2 months - which if all I do is replicate that then I'm on 2k miles for the year - I should be able to do a bit more though - 245 miles in March replicated for the rest of the year would put me at 2.6k ... hmm ... need to ride a bit more - which I am doing when I can.

Not so much riding with LSB - we're at an impasse - he doesn't think he can ride with pedals - despite he's done it a couple of times - so he's actively refusing to ride - so I'm trying to back off a bit and see what we can do ... although he did ask for clips the other evening !!
