Is being good at cycling a realistic goal?

That's a great post w00dster, I agree on average speed not mattering too much. As for your questions, I try to pace myself much as possible so I don't burn out. In doing so I manage to go up most hills without being exhausted. I can usually feel if I'm in the correct gear so I can tailor my gear change according to how hard I have to work.

I had a session today on an upright cycle, switching between high and low resistance to give a real feel of going up and down hills. I did it for about 40 mins but I'll extend it to 60/90 mins. As for a indoor workout plan, I have been meaning to look for those, hopefully I'll find a decent one. I don't plan on spending the whole week indoors training though, hopefully on better days I'll be heading out.

Well if I average 15mph+, able to ride up most steep Yorkshire hills and a endurance of 40+ miles then I'd be happy. I do have big dreams of cycling all over UK, along coast lines and in other eu countries but they are long term goals. I don't know what my ftp is and I feel I need to invest in a cycling computer soon that reads cadence and HR as mines pretty basic. I did go on my bike ride today but I'll most likely be using gym bikes till this sub zero weather goes.

What you're able to achieve is really good. If you go on 50 miles bike rides averaging 16mph I'm sure you are quite happy. What did you mean by at 44 after only six months cycling? Are you 44 yrs old and can achieve those figures after only six months of cycling, if so that's amazing. I guess it is achievable, if you train right and know what you are doing. Was there anything in particular you did or was it just slowly increasing endurance?

I started with a local route for six weeks, it was only 20mins but I went hard so I got my body into a state where I could at least try and get fit. What I mean by that is you see morbidly obese people that can't get fit because they aren't even fit enough to get fit if that makes sense?

Beyond that each month I added 10 miles to my standard route (around 5 times per week). I am pretty focused on it though (divorce meant cycling was all I had).

You need to go easy, say 60% of effort, on 1or 2 rides per week, but go further. That will gain you endurance, from that point go 65% then 70% etc etc and that will then gain you power.

You can do this. I'm in Yorkshire too and if u need someone to motivate you on a ride I'm happy to help you.
  • When I say "on one or two rides" I mean that they should be the longer rides, total, with your goals I should suggest 3 rides per week at 15m each time. Then if you can do a 22.5 mile one too you will soon improve.

Okay that's sounds definitely doable! Thanks for the offer of meeting up, perhaps one day we will at some charity cycling event. I'll follow up with the advice you and others have provided and I'll be back here to discuss the results. Hopefully I'll be back with good news! So far I've managed to cycle four times this week. Twice outdoors and twice indoors. I'll probably have to sort out my sit bone pain soon if I am to go further tho! Hopefully it will be soon, in the mean time I'll just go short and hard to build up enough power.
