Because the Athena rear mech geo is the same as the previous generation Chorus i.e. up to 2014. In 2015 11 speed Campagnolo groups had a number of changes, one of which was a different rear mech geo. Athena is not one of the new generation groups and the rear mech has a different geo to that required by your new generation shifters.

Athena is not listed on the Campag 11 speed mechanical groupset page on their website even.

Thanks for the information; So the best thing to do would be to purchase a new Chorus rear mech?

    Thanks,

I'm afraid so. Maybe the new generation Potenza or Centaur would work acceptably, not sure - someone else might know. To be sure, a new gen. Chorus, Record or Super Record mech is needed.

That's fine, all projects come with small setbacks :) I'd rather a Chorus than Potenza or Centaur anyway so I'll take the plunge, thanks for telling me, as I would have had a bigger struggle to return the part as it would have been fitted.

Just to make things worse I have just noticed that you have an Athena front mech.

Also different and also won't work, for similar reasons.

Sorry. Hopefully you can return that too.

That’s fine - didn’t cost me much on eBay. I’m really struggling to find a suitable front mech online. What else would be compatible with a chorus rear mech?

    Thanks

It's compatibility with the shifters you need to make sure of.

Are you struggling because you need a band-on mech?

    If so:

    And:
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/campagnolo-front-derailleur-clamp?sku=5360493558&source=igodigital

Make sure to get the right size clamp for your seat tube. If you have a braze-on mount on your frame, you only need the top item.

Yes, I've ordered these. I need a band on, but noticed the clamp. 35mm I needed so hopefully they will be here soon :)

Received the wheels, bar tape, chorus cassette and bottle cage to keep me going :D

This is where I am at so far, going to fit the bar tape in the next few days and get the tyres on the wheels.

Quite worried about fitting the rear mech and the cassette - it all seems quite confusing atm.
  • Just received the Chorus Rear Mech and I'm a bit worried.

It says Chorus HO on it - (not what I ordered off eBay) I've googled HO and apparently it's optimised for Disc brakes?

Does anyone know if this will still be compatible with the components I have?

    Thanks

    loOKIng good - top work.

I'd leave the bar tape until you have ridden it a few times and have shifte position down to a "T" completely - far easier to shift stuff around without tape in.

I think that rear mech is fine, btw. Campagnolo have stopped making rear mechs that are not their HO variety. They're optimised for wider dropout spacing (142mm), but you should be fine.

Thanks for the info Ben :)
    Problems? Pray tell.

It's the routing for the rear brake, it goes from the handlebars and then all the way through to the seatpost. It just won't go all the way through. I have tried it the other way around and it is fine. I think it's just a case of being patient with it.
  • This is where I'm at so far, went with Fulcrum Racing Quattro wheels in the end, affordable, still quite deep and really light.

  • Bit of a late update:

Got the pedals sorted, routed most of the cables, until I found that I'm missing a ferrule in the frame where the rear brake cable enters, so when I try to apply the brake it just pulls the cable through the internal routing. I've had to purchase some from America as I can't get hold of any from UK, so I'm pretty much waiting for them now.

I have since sorted a chain and got a genuine campag chain tool - I will be honest I am dreading doing the chain, it looks so confusing.

Use a KMC quick link for the chain.

Okay, I'll get one on order :)

    Thanks
  • So this is where I've got to. Been battling severe flu and middle ear infection and with the weather being poor I haven't had a good day to test ride before I put the bar tape on. Love the way it changed gear, I thought my Bianchi Via Nirone 7 was nice.
Any tips regarding fitting the bar tape? would it be ideal to warm the tape up so it's a bit more malleable?

Looking good, Kelvin. I have a few observations:

    1. Bars look like they need rotating back a little - the flats of the hoods want to be level, ideally, or thereabouts.
    2. Saddle seems to be tilted up - personal preference prevails, but you might find it hurts your gooch.
    3. QR levers should be non-driveside. :)
    4. Gear cable outers look a little on the long side between the levers and the headtube stops
    5. Brake cable outer looks a little on the long side near the seat stays - is it one piece through the toptube?

You shouldn't need to warm up the bar tape - room temperature is fine. Lots of videos on YouTube showing the basics, the lever figure-8 etc. Don't panic, you can unwrap and re-wrap a good handful of time.

I hope you're feeling better soon!

  • Hi Ben

Thanks for the kind words, yes, I thought the cables were all a bit too big, rather have them too long than cut them too short, so they will be adjusted.
The bars are fixed to the headstock so I need to adjust the position of the levers.
I've got a frame ferrule on order for the brake cable because when I press the brake lever it pulls the cable through the frame so the rear brakes don't work haha.
Didn't realise about the QR levers either !

Thanks, I can deal with the pain but not being able to hear in one ear is so annoying... D:

I didn't realise it was a one-piece stem/bar. Yes, move the shifters in that case. :-) Understood re the brake cable - annoying!

Nice frame-set and a lovely paint job.

    I don't like the carrier.
Maybe a Specialized Ribcage glossy black would look better.
  • Sorry for the late responses. Only just recovered from my illness.

All sorted, had a few goes of it and I absolutely love it! silky smooth and extremely quiet.

Thought my first attempt at bar taping went quite well!

looking good - i might have been tempted to move the shifters up a tad but if it works for you then fair dinkum.

whats with the black leather couch? do you live on a porn film set?

  • Thanks Matthew, I do agree regarding the shifters, it does feel comfy enough for the rides I have done, I might adjust it in the near future when I ride it more often.

Haha @ the porn set reference, it is in fact dark brown, we have recently moved house and the couch was £30 second hand so well worth it for that.

Unless you have a particularly long torso in comparison to your leg length, that fit doesn't look right to me. Stem looks way too long and I can't see how those shifters can be comfortable sitting so far down the drops.
