They're far from the 3 most photogenic riders in the peloton

That Italian champion's jersey is an absolute travesty.
To be fair, they changed it the next day
Good! The Italian national champs kit should be one of the easiest to get right, that looks awful!

    Slightly better, but still poor
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

    Improvement but not much!

Nibali's one at Astana was much better, well the second iteration anyway. I think they had a similar shocker as a first attempt?

Nah it was Aru last season who got the proper one. Nibs 2014 one was awful.

Do we see any other 'Continental' Champions' Jerseys? Asia / Africa etc?

I've never seen one but they don't tend to be in the races we see.

However, Lucas Hamilton is the Oceania champion for a couple more months and is new at Mitchelton.
Gruzdev was the Asian TT champion last year but I can't find a picture of him in non-standard Astana kit.

Ah yes. He got the full jersey rather than just a band
  • Perhaps UCI could bring a rule in saying that national champs jerseys have room be plain/absent of sponsors logos/ stand out markedly from remaining team jersey similar to fdj's offerings in recent years?

Unlikely since the special jerseys are quite important for the sponsors' branding. Imagine telling a sponsor their logo won't be displayed on Sagan (regardless of WC jersey or nat. championship).

Yes, just as long as the same rule says that the national champion's federation pays his entire salary for that year to compensate the sponsor.

National champions jerseys were fine when their were only about five countries in cycling and the teams tended to ride a fairly parochial program. But when Marc De Maar turned up in a champion's jersey of Curacao (which is better known as liqueur than a 'country'**) they should have scrapped the lot of them.

**And by country we should mean a sovereign state which is a member of the UN in its own right

  • I'd have thought being national champion would bring a lot of kudos for any team & sponsors and possibly open new advertising/sponsorship opportunities in that country...

On the subject of national jerseys, this is as eloquently written as ever by the best cycling journo around

It's OK I suppose, just a bit less inspiring than the original kit. The WIGGINS and LECOL on the shorts clash.

Not really considering that Joe/Joanne Soap don’t know much about cycling and think that they are all dopers anyway.

Personally though, Enigmatic Ian Stannard being British champion wouldn’t exactly persuade me to buy anything his sponsors were selling and neither would, well, any of them.

Slight difference between encouraging me to buy it and increasing my awareness of the product.

E.g., I'd never watch Greipel win a stage and then rush out to buy some Soudal glue. But confronted with two brands of glue, provided the cost is about the same, I'm probably more likely to buy the one I have heard of (using this as an example because I actually bought some!).

It has to be said that there are no real iconic jerseys anymore. When was the last jersey that can be considered a memorable classic to rival those of the 70s-90s. Jerseys from those days still linger - Molteni, Peugeot, Brooklyn, La Vie Claire, Systeme U, Z, Once, Kelme, etc. Even Ullrich's Bianchi jersey which lasted a few months.

What over last decade will stand the test of time?

I know there is too much baggage associated, but I think the original Addidas Sky jersey qualifies. I liked the Leopard Trek too, they provoked a bit of a neo retro trend

I'd say the first Rapha Sky jersey - kept for a couple of seasons. Black with blue band on the arm. That will be a jersey everyone remembers in years to come.
  • I actually think the Wiggins kit is excellent.

However there will be a time for innovative rather than retro kits.

The HTC Kit was very good, as was the HighRoad one before that..

Don't forget Manzano Postobon and anything by Vini Fantini, their kits a certainly eye catching

It never fails to astonish me how many Tinkoff/Saxo jerseys I see on the road... not my choice but reckon that well on the way to becoming a classic.

not many of the above really. the Sky jersey turned people off black in my view, except the rabbits in the headlights.

the current quickstep one is clean and the dimension data current kit should be a design classic when it qualifies... I also like the trek red kit.

the giant one deserves the award for the laziest design.
  • The stripy MTN-Qhubeka one with the big hand on the back was pretty good.

strange isnt it ? Le Col mix the same red, white, blue colours for Storey Racing together, and it looks so much better.

I remember the first time I saw some Mapei grout, I was like "Oh, That's what they make" :-D

I still want a Polti vacuum cleaner and a Saeco coffee machine :-)
  • And a Superconfex dustbin?
  • Wasn't there a nice kit at the olympics? Norway maybe?

    'Twas Denmark
