Strava 'Posts'

One thing I found rather amusing was that if viewing on a computer, if you resize the window down slightly it adjusts its layout ... and the right side-bar then either gets moved to the bottom of the scrolling page (or hidden) it's hard to tell as any time I scroll it adds more activities.
This does rather hamper your ability to click on the "support", "premium" or change language options.
Also a few friends that have apostrophes in their names are now showing up with ' instead ... someone hasn't tested the character encodings properly0 -
Veloviewer has updated his chrome extension to allow you to sort posts in chronological order0
-
and sooner or later I bet the posts will start to feature "Sponsored posts" otherwise know as thinly veiled adverts pretending to be articles0

Strava always was a bit social media ish anyway, wasn't it?
I just set all my rides to private by default and just use it as a useful tool to upload my rides to and see how my progress is. It's still great for that if you don't want the friendface type of stuff that can go with it as well.0 -
My Stravabook has been closed down as of today.
I don’t use/like Facebook, I’m not criticising anyone who does, but for me it’s simply not my thing, and for Strava to go down that road sort of made my decision quite easy.
There are elements of it I will miss but hey, it’s not the EOTW is it!!0 -
Apologies for another dumb question, would only posts from people you follow show up, I only follow 4 people so should not see much activity if that is the case or will random strangers posts start showing on my activity page?0

Just people you follow.0 -

Thanks guys, I'm afraid all this "social media" stuff is a bit beyond me, never been on Farcebook or Twatter or any of the others and long may that continue.
If I want to talk with people I go to the pub!0 -
Presumably they aren't making enough/any money and need to attract more adverts and sponsors. Thin end of the wedge.0

Surely the running costs for a website must be minimal. Especially after it's set up.
I wonder if there's any websites out there that are up and running (excuse the pun) just because of the owners love of the subject, rather than out to make a profit ?"The Prince of Wales is now the King of France" - Calton Kirby0 -
I'm disappointed in the negative attitude of some Sysadmins... shocking...I communicate with all my Service Desk ticket holders via social media , to tell them , switch it off and on and then fu ck the off .
Strava postings makes it easier for twa ttish cyclists.0 -

Loads. I am a member of a motorbike forum which is hosted on a member's business server. No-one pays anything for it and there are no adverts.
I am not sure what the running costs for Strava would be but assuming that it's a business then there will be an expected minimum yield. According to this website, Strava has Venture Capital funding. They will want their money back with a premium:

None of my drinking buddies are cyclists so I come on here to talk with experts like yourself.0 -

Well looking at it that way Facebook is just a website but as of December 2016 had 17,048 employees.
Strava is a little smaller with between 51-200 employees apparently but still significant running costs.0 -
I wonder how long Strava will allow this club to continue?

This might interest you, or at least provide a small glance at how un-simple even one aspect of something like Strava is https://medium.com/strava-engineering/from-data-streams-to-a-data-lake-b6ca17c00a230 -
I really don't know what all the fuss is about, I post my rides, have a quick flick through to see if any of my mate's have done anything cool recently then carry on with my day. I occasionally go into my profile and look at the training stuff, or abuse a friend for crashing every ride but that is about it, I haven't really noticed anything different. Like every new thing, there will be fuss, then it will go back to normal and no one will careben@31 wrote:Navrig2 wrote:Presumably they aren't making enough/any money and need to attract more adverts and sponsors. Not PROFIT?! Can people not profit from things they love?0 -

Well it is good that you are happy with it, but you highlight one problem yourself " I post my rides, have a quick flick through to see if any of my mate's have done anything cool recently". Seeing as the feed is no longer in order then a quick flick through may not show your mates rides.0 -

Doesn't it show you the most 'interesting' ones or something? I mostly skip past everyone's boring commutes to abuse my friends on their more interesting rides anyway. It doesn't take a huge amount of time to flick through, if I don't see anything interesting I can live without it...0 -
HaydenM wrote:It doesn't take a huge amount of time to flick through, if I don't see anything interesting I can live without it...
It takes a lot longer than it did 'cos the activity boxes are now huge.
I only follow a few people so it doesn't really make a huge difference to me, but I can see if I were to follow a dozens of people it would be a very different experience from before.0 -

Me too! If you don't like social media, then let it go. I like reading articles and general stuff about bikes and cycling, if my mates are posting about it on Strava it will be more interesting or relevant to me than the latest £10k bike review in a magazine...0 -
Not bothered about the new big images really, don't see why that makes it better. But I don't like getting a PR for every new segment on a ride/run. 16 "achievements" on one 20km ride just because it is somewhere new...0
-
It’s going down the ‘social media’ road. I’ll be looking for a suitable replacement, that has the functionality I need ( route mapping, from a recorded ride) and the like, but without the ‘socialmeejaisms’ that are creeping into Strava now.0

Have they fixed a bug where you can load the same ride several times?0
