Rick Chasey wrote:Belgians have a great team for this.
GvA, Gilbert, Naesen, Stuyven, Wellens, Benoot, to name a few.
Do they have a good plan though? Too often teams go into this race with a strong line up, but no clear plan and then they ride against each other.
If we assume GvA is their best bet, then they need to make it a hard race to dull the sprint of riders like Sagan and Matthews. Which would mean sacrificing the chances of Wellens and Gilbert, probably through attacks from distance for the former, and on the final ascent for the latter.0 -

Presumably you throw all those different riders at various points down the road.
3 to go, 2 to go, final lap.
GvA won't win if he's in a reduced field with Matthews etc so they need to make it hard.
I'd say they have the riders to do that.0 -

Julius Johansen jumps on the smaller hill before Laksebakken - last lap - gets daylight. He's going to be hard to catch on the flat.Warning No formatter is installed for the format0

Superb solo effort to win, chapeau Julius. He was absolutely gutted about his puncture in the TT, where he was one of the real favourites.Warning No formatter is installed for the format0

RichN95 wrote:Very strong ride by Johansen there. Italy seemed to make a mess of their tactics. I'm assuming they don't have radios.
Italy were all over the place, all race.
Johansen says track riding helped him - which isn't surprising given the UCI max gear ratio is fairly low for those descents. Good leg speed!Warning No formatter is installed for the format0 -
So now we've had a decent look at Salmon Hill, do we think it will be selective enough? As was pointed out a little further up, it's longer than it looks, because the actual climb doesn't count the bumps leading up to it, which have roughly the same amount of climbing involved. We'll get a better idea when the women race it.
Worth noting though that the junior silver and bronze pretty much went to a sprint from a thinned peloton (though they only climbed it 5 times).
Of course the fact that junior gears are restricted means that opportunity for gaining time on the descents was a bit limited.Warning No formatter is installed for the format0 -
Jolly decent junior mens race, enjoyed that0

73km and around 3 1/2 laps to go in the Women's race and Vos is doing a job for the Dutch team as breakaway killer. All together bar Anderson (NOR) who's just off the front.0

Some of the favourites having trouble on the climb. Borghini is out the back and it should be a perfect course for her.BASI Nordic Ski Instructor

First attack comes from Pieters (NED) who is joined by Barnes (GBR) and Neylan (AUS) looks like they will be caught though with USA and German riders doing most of the work at the front of the peloton0

Crash in the main group has meant that the three leaders have around a 35" lead. MeganGuarnier (USA) and Italian riders seemed to be most affected0

Italians are now in a group 30" behind peloton, and the break got a few seconds extra gap, now up to 30".Warning No formatter is installed for the format0

Is three riders the ideal number for the break in this sort of race? Still a long way to go but all guaranteed a medal if it sticks.0

Cool, not only can women cycle, they can also be mechanics.
I wouldn't fancy tightening my stem during a bike race....Warning No formatter is installed for the format0 -

You might want a couple more to put more teams out of chasing - you only get the medals if you stay awayWarning No formatter is installed for the format0 -
