Boys, boys... It's all well and good this prediction malarky, but it's not an echelon until ATC sounds the klaxon. I actually suspect that the klaxon is so powerful it causes the splits.

    Mange tak.

Any, I missed today's stage, due to being on an aeroplane. The thread as usual has some food info on what happened, by DK TV coverage was more focussed on Birdsong at hoe with his baby....

    So, your starters for ten:

    1) Who kicked off the echelons? From the brief glimpse I saw it looked like Sky. Hav they really become the new QS?
    2) There seemed to be a suggestion that Aru had to work hard to make the split - is this right, and if so, how hard?

Thanks in advance. Winner gets a Blue Peter badge and a chance to meet one of The Doctor's companions.
Sky got themselves at the front to navigate a couple of tricky turns in a small town and then just kept the pressure on which caused the split. Aru was maybe 2 to 3 bike lengths off the back, couple of more and he may have been toast.

MY MAN Kwia was instrumental in getting Froome to the front and forcing the pace. He was getting a lot of love from José and Karsten.
Yep, Froome owes Kwia big time for everything he's done this tour. Quality bike rider and clearly happy to give everything for the team.

So Degenkolb is a bit of a d1ck then. I'm no Matthews fan but he had no case at all to say he closed the door on him.

    Needs to grow a pair.

Definitely kept him in front group - Bardet looked gapped and Naesen buried himself to get him back on. Not sure anyone else made it.

Only just caught up. I thought EBH had won it there. Glad he didn't. Phew.

On the Cycling Podcast Naesen said him and Bardet were sitting immediately behind Dan Martin when Martin lost the wheel to create the gap and the two of them had to go full on to ride across the gap.

Boys on ITV didn't ID Degenkolb (at least, on the highlights) and I think my wife got a bit fed up with me going ARE WE SURE THAT'S DEGENKOLB, and then thought I was odd when the sprint kicked off I was shouting 'YES HE'S NODDING IT'S DEGENKOLB'.

And Matthews knew what he was doing in the sprint with Degenkolb but then if Degenkolb wants to moan he can start his sprint ahead of Matthews rather than behind.

    well played

as an aside, is there any talk of Tommeke joining QS in any kind of capacity?

Ok, now I am going to have a bit of a flounce around and kick my teddy bear.

    Crosswinds?

Ah well, now you come to mention it.

    http://france.lachainemeteo.com/meteo-f ... 4447-1.php

Judging from those gusts, there is plenty of puff, but mostly from an unfavourable direction.
Big tailwind to finish, but the few kms beforehand, between Chateauneuf sur Isere and Alixan could prove tricky, with a direct crosswind, if the forecast is to be believed.
Especially as the roads at that point are rather narrow, minor "D" roads.

Decent effort but you didn't give any detail, I'll give you a share of the glory though if you like

Who knew the Belgian champ and Flanders specialist would be alright in crosswinds?

Can't find any near here for a sensible price unfortunately. I'm off this week so looking for some local wines to increase my enjoyment of the stage...

    I think I'll have to settle for a Crozes-Hermitage.

    Another option might be:

    http://www.waitrosecellar.com/all-wine- ... int-joseph

Co op had a Crozes-Hermitage which is proving more than adequate.

Fun stage- bad for my PTP though! A lot of other people in the same boat though.

Just had his elbows out didn't he? First lesson sprint school, his sprint was pretty straight. I think Degenkolb was just frustrated as he's had so few opportunities since that big training crash.

 Matthews had a high speed police escort, complete with flashing lights, all the way along the motorway, straight through the peage, to his hotel.
Turns out they were after a photo.

Ha - I was watching on the Eurosport player, so heard the nice Frenchman say what it was. I assume this was one of those bits where they show it so that the locals don't block the road with tractors in protest.

Not listed as a withdrawal on the Tour website, Wasn't doing the ouchy collar bone pose either, so fingers crossed he's 'just' banged up a bit.

Still fine with me, as long as there's no sudden change of direction and you're in front. It was what annoyed me with that Cav relegation against Thor that cost him a green jersey

What's the lowest place on GC the riders would consider worth more than a stage win in the Alps

I'd say 8th on GC. Depends on who you are though. 8th on GC is different for Bob Jungels, than for Contador.

You could see him crashing, just as Kwiat had given to charge order and everything was beginning to string out,
I have a feeling that this is how Contador shipped time, as it was right at the back of the strung out bunch.

I also have a feeling that Bardet and Aru would not have seen them again, had Thomas and Rowe been there.
Aru had to make a huge 30+ second effort and was getting nowhere until the initial echelon stalled.

    Naesen most definitely saved Bardet.
