but someone who doesn't get mugged into paying massively over the odds for very average wheels.

i think the fact that both bods who run hunt used to work in the industry and thetefore know the profit margins and what marketing works to sell average kit at top end prices may be a pointet........

    why ruined?

because better wheel deals have been pointed out?

the guy wanted the best £1,000 wheels. Hunts are obviously not them.

Hell's teeth, you can even get Boras for less than Hunts at the moment. Thats Boras from Campagnolo for less than Hunts.

  • I recently bought some Bontrega Aeolus Pro 3 carbons (rim brake) which I negotiated down to £825.

Haven't ridden them yet as I got knocked off my other bike before had chance to fit them to my best bike.

Nearly back to good health and looking forward to getting back on bike.

Does anyone want to burst my bubble prior to having a ride on them and tell me I could have got such and such a brand which are far better for less money!

Thank the lord for that! Just can't wait to give them a go, going out today for first time since accident for a "feeler" on the "pub" bike, hopefully back on best bike by next week, lot of strength to build back up after three months sidelined.

Matthewfalle is bang on with what he's saying. I worked for one of the UK wheel brands, our wheels where produced in the same factory as hunt and our boxes sat next to theirs when they're ready to leave. Three guys in charge of wheels and one of us was out in the factory every 12 months. Trying different rims out in taiwan, both on CX bikes and road bikes.

Its not that they're bad wheels but it is whichever builder is there and the next parts taken from the box.

Personally we had very few returns and the quality was as good as any big brand with a similar problem/return rate.
The cost price of the wheels is higher than most expect and the margins arent huge.

The biggest issue was new cyclists riding their brakes down long descents and warping rims but thats an issue with virtually all carbon wheels. Jet washes and degreaers around hubs was common.

Plenty of good wheels out there to choose from at sub £1000. I'd be happy buyong from Hunt, Zuus and Cero.

I'm sure that the wheels are all the same, but please please please don't give Zuus a penny of your money. Their UK support are totally clueless about the things they sell, and they never answer the phone or e-mails. When you eventually get them to respond they are pretty surly and unhelpful. Even when you supply them with links to all the correct information on the things they are selling they don't correct their website and they send you the wrong stuff three times in a row.

If you mention this on their FB page (as you can't get a response any other way) they delete your comment and block you.

If you wonder why they only get golden reviews, its 'cause they've deleted the bad ones.

If you are picking between Chinese wheels with UK support, then with Zuus I suspect you'll not get much support at all.

I am not here to enter into the Hunt versus whoever wheelset supplier argument here. I have had some Hunt 4 seasons for 3 years. Great wheels but a spoke going on me on a descent of the Peyresourde last summer made me a bit wobbly about using them for a Girona trip this past weekend. So i bought some Zuus pro carbon 50mm to put on my Giant advanced pro disc. Perhaps a little deep but similar weight to the Hunt's if not a bit lighter. Would i notice the difference? Nah. Anyway, wheels rolled nicely and i never felt, over 550km and 8000m of climbing that the wheels were holding me back. Very happy with them.

    OK So far then

    Hunt - No
    Zuus - No
Cero - There deep section 50's have the most gaudy decals on - No

What we recommending to the OP ?

Please include links as I can not find wheels at some of the prices quoted...

Isn't the correct answer some UK handbuilts. E.g.
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-design-C ... SwE-lZ8u-D

or for a bit more cash...
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Carbonal-DT- ... Swj1haZzqu

Basically the same components as wheels such as Hunts or direct Chinese imports but cheaper than the former and in the case of the latter potentially better pre and after sales service and no worries about import duties or what might happen if a return is needed.

Both of those are from Mark at Spokesman wheels. He'll build you pretty much any combo you want. I have a pair of his 38mm carbonal asymetric rims in 29/32 spoke on Hope RS4 hubs (I am 102kg) and they are lovely wheels. If you go direct to him rather than through ebay he'll knock a bit off for fees and you get to talk to him before he builds them. I would 100% recommend him.

The oft-discussed Carbonzone, Farsports, etc - there's a load of other similar threads about them, tbh..

Have looked at both of them on Google and to be fair would they be "equally as good" with them having the basalt brake rim?
Also at the cheaper price point they appeared to be clincher only not TLR.

50mm handbuilts on Miche Primato hubs for £800

AS MrB123 says - with a UK builder at least you can talk to someone direct and even tailor your build if you want him to tweak some components

I have these wheels and I recommend them.

What you get with a decent wheel builder is not the wheel building itself, but the selection of the most appropriate components that will work together and be fit for purpose.
